The Hobbit - Erebor Dwarf Armour - FINISHED

Re: The Hobbit - Erebor Dwarf Armour - Weapons - WIP

Just came across this thread. You've done some awesome work! Looking forward to the finished results.

Re: The Hobbit - Erebor Dwarf Armour - Weapons - WIP

Love your work! I'm currently working on my own Erebor Dwarf costume and your work has been a great help and inspiration for me. I've hit a bit of a roadblock in trying to make the shoulder pauldrons. I can't seem to get the shape right. Do you have any templates that would help me?

Thanks everyone for the kind words! I just bought some craft foam to I can finish detailing the shoulders. I'm saving a bit of money to put towards a heat gun to finish the rest of the pieces.

As for the shoulders, I have had a lot of people ask me about templates for these and the helmet, I haven't really been working off a template since the first rough helmet one, everything has been by eye. I did the quickest of paper templates when starting the shoulder just to know what sort of curve I would need but even that I ended up doing it wrong, in these first shots of the shoulders the curve of the upper portion is much too round, I had to cut a half in tapered piece out of the center and close the gap to get a more natural curve that lined up with the lower portions better. And even then I made some mistakes from what the film/concept version is like. I'm not a huge stickler for movie accuracy, so I'm able to get passed it without stressing too hard.

O.JPGI've started on my own Erebor Dwarf. I was going nowhere fast until I stumbled across your page. So thanks, and please keep your amazing posts coming!

Very cool! Love the addition of the life jacket for bulk, but I'd be afraid of getting even more warm then the foam will make it.

Re: The Hobbit - Erebor Dwarf Armour - Weapons - WIP

Yeah, the life jacket was just an idea which I soon dismissed for that very reason. Will probably build around the shoulder pads and try to keep some air-flow inside the torso area. Gets pretty warm here in Brisbane.

Very nice work. I've never worked with foam but it looks easier than bondo and fiberglass like I hard headedly attempt. lol

Where is the best place to get the EVA Foam?

Awesome work! I love the detail and am a big fan of the LoTR series and the Hobbit... I really hope this project continues! Asfor the chain mail, you could always use exactly what Weta Workshops used: PVC pipe! they used a plastic pipe about 1/2 inch diameter and cut hundreds of 1/8th wide rings... then used a dremel or saw and cut an opening in each ring, connected them in the mail pattern and then glued the opening on each ring shut... long process but cheap as heck... an 8 foot pipe in 1/2 inch is less than 10$ at a hardware store (get black, not white) and then once you cut the rings, just dump them all in a bucket of silver paint or spray them... strain off the paint and start assembling the chainmail!

Hope this helps save on cost... I know what a model makers life is when you are on a budget... heck, I have been working off and on my AC2 build for a year due to time and cost constraints!

Also, Congrats on the Pulse page!!

Great work done by the OP but when I did some research to make my own helmet, I noticed a pretty big inaccuracy compared to the design in the movie. The ridge on top of the helmet that goes from front to back is thin and decorated with a boar design, which gives the helmet a less bulky design.

Oops! I got a bit behind in replies. Thanks everyone for all the compliments! I'll try to catch up.

I got mine at Home Depot but it wasn't the best selection wise. Some people have posted about online stores if you need tons of it.

OMG WHAAAT! Thanks a ton!

Thanks! It's still going, I'm just waiting on money to buy tools and materials, ran out of hot glue sticks this time :/ As for chainmaille, I've actually got a side "business" making chainmaille jewelry, so I'm in no short supply of rings, tools or know-how on that end :p Check out the link in my signature.

If you're looking to make cheap chain mail, look at this tutorial: How to Make Chain Mail Armor from Start to Finish « Metalworking

Same as above, I don't bother making my own rings, I know it's cheaper but the amount of space in my apartment I save in not having the wire and tools and the time spent to make the rings is kind of worth it. Plus I work in coloured rings a lot so that's something I wouldn't be able to do at home.

Ya, I noticed that early in my construction, I think I mentioned it somewhere. I was working off stills of the movie and some lower res shots of the art book so it was hard to make out the boar shape at first. It's kind of good that I had made the forehead piece so wide, since it hid the lines of the pieces I made the dome out of. I knew from the get-go that I wasn't going to be able to make this 100% movie accurate, so I'm ok with some differences, I figure not every single guard in the city wore the exact same helmet.

Re: The Hobbit - Erebor Dwarf Armour - Weapons - WIP

I noticed the difference too but I actually preferred your version (so much so that I copied it). I agree with not trying to be 100% accurate. I'd go nuts otherwise.

Re: The Hobbit - Erebor Dwarf Armour - Weapons - WIP

Oh my! I love this!!!
I can't wait to see more of whats to come!

Re: The Hobbit - Erebor Dwarf Armour - Weapons - WIP

thanks for the inspiration :D you helped this come true for me!

Mind = blown. This is amazing! I love that I'm inspiring so many people but hate that you're all working SO much faster than me. I have no progress to report, I've got more hot glue but no heat gun and no money for paint :(

Oh my!!!!! *drools* That looks AMAAAAAZING!
