The Hobbit, Bilbo's Jacket

-howdy guys (i'm new!), i'm not sure if i have this posted in the right place but...ok here we go. Not sure if there are any hobbit fans on here but i really like bilbo's jacket from the new hobbit film coming out and i need some help with details because i had an idea to make this my fall jacket.

-well to me it looks like velvet with gold buttons but not that durable for some reason. Well i wanted a jacket like his that would function indoors and out a cross between and frock coat and blazer almost. I'd rather go for a blue color and maybe even instead of velvet go with a corduroy instead. ive emailed magnoli about this but you guys have a wonderful eye for detail too so your input in also important for SA jacket, although if you look at some of the pics below it does seem that his jacket is both velvet and corduroy.

-I think i can pull it off without looking crazy, but again i think could be a unique look if done right (i just dont want to look like a pirate). i know it wont hold up in winter which is fine because i don't want it to look bulky. but just let me know what you guys think, thanks!! (sorry for all the pics)

It actually is corduroy. This shot shows the fabric the best: “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey†| Flickr - Photo Sharing!

Looks like a maroon/umber dye blend. It's a true cord, which definitely has a more velvet look to it. It's also been worn down and aged, so the pile of the fabric and the color of it changes.

Most, if not all of the hobbits had some sort of cord in their costumes. Frodo's jacket was cord, Pippin's pants, Merry's pants, Bilbo's jacket in LotR. About the only time they wore velvet was when Frodo and Sam were dressed in silk velvet elven robes at the end of RotK. And Frodo's jacket had cotton velvet lapels.

I'll shut up now LOL. I actually do LotR costuming panels, so I discuss this quite a bit!

Awesome. This info is what I needed I even emailed wets workshop today. Im looking for a good custom jacket and knowing its corduroy is a huge load off. Im a true hobbit at heart and I already dress like one! But a custom job I hope isn't crazy expensive, but is this just a small frock coat or a pure custom in house just for these characters.

NOPE! Not even close, the cut's all wrong, its designed for someone who is slim and tall. If I had to pick between the two jackets you posted I would go for the burgundy velvet smoking jacket

Argh! Yes yes maybe I should try thrift stores. Is bilbos jacket like a cross between a frock coat and something fancy? In any case thank you for replying!! Although it may be cut for a tall slim person its for sure the closest thing ive found that isnt a in house job

well big mistake i thought a 38 would be small enough but...it ran big anyway along with big shoulder pads. plus its plum not burgundy. can i take it to a tailor to turn it into a 3 button and have it look closer to bilbos? or is that a stretch for already made jacket to try and mold into something different? heres a link to what it looks like. or if anyone here would like a shot at it just let me know, thanks guys.

So am I the ONLY person on here interested in this jacket? Tell me it not true!

Hey there

I don`t know if still anybody is interested in a proper Bilbo Costume but i found two great options fro all of you:

1.) For +/- 120 Euro you can have a pretty nice version of the burgundy courderoy coat, the yellow vest from the beginning and some brown 3/4 pants: Halblingskostüm - Der Hobbit - Elbenwald.de

2.) There`s a Tailor Factory in New Zealand called "Magnoli Clothiers" (Magnoli Clothiers) which is very experienced in proper Movie-Replica Clothes. i just ordered one full Bilbo Costume replica and the costs are:

- Shirt (egyptian cotton blend): $125
- Vest (wool blend): $195
- Pants: $175
- Frock coat: $750

I`ll post some pics in June, as soon as the package arrives :)

Were you successful with your purchase from Magnoli Clothiers? I'm interested in the frock coat as well, but they don't have this on there website (any longer).

A little late, but the fabric on the collar is velvet and the buttons on the coat are leather shank buttons. They're fairly common, it's a standard style. Those acorn buttons on the vest might be tricky to source, though.
