The Book of Eli

"The Book of Eli" movie was seriously lacking in story. The whole religioul overtones riddled throughout the movie made it a real turn-off for me. The action scenes were well choreographed, but the extremely boring story couldn't make up for a bad film. Stay clear unless you want to pay money for a movie that will put you to sleep.

I liked it quite a bit. I didn't read anything beforehand and i'm happy I didn't, as it would've wasted the whole experience.

Not the best movie of the decade but I like Denzel Washington and Gary Oldman so... I couldn't go wrong.

it's not for the non-spiritual person for sure. It had a good story and message. People forget sometimes that movies are for entertainment and enjoyment..lol

I think this is going to be it's greatest weakness. So many people have such a knee jerk reaction to religious content in media these days it's going to bother them and they'll tune it out. I'm not a Christian, but I can appreciate a good story and there IS a good story in there. You and others just don't like it because it's a CHRISTIAN story.

I agree. I'm totally non-christian and non-spiritual but I actually liked the story. I mean what's left to hope for beside God when the world has been completely destroyed and turned into a toxic desert where people eat each other?

I'm an avid sci-fi reader and I enjoy tons of books that are sometimes even hostile to my faith, yet I can still enjoy the story. You don't have to agree with something to still enjoy it.

I loved it, and thought they did a great job of not being a film about a "message" it was not preachy at all, they even avoided some easy, preachy moments. It is not a movie about religion it is a move about faith and the focus of that faith is not important - which to me makes it not religious - which is good since I am agnostic, and hate preachy films (Avatar anyone? I guess preachy-films bothering people depends on if they see the preserved message as good or bad).
I enjoyed it, always nice to see some more-than-I-expected violence:thumbsup

Hey... I'm a deist who hates mainstream, overblown, systematic, legalistic religions who are no longer about what they were originally meant for and and take things way out of context, but I found the message of faith and hope in a world where there is none to be very uplifting, especially when youve had a crappy year like I have.

Like Skaught said, I'll even watch or read things that are contrary to what I believe in, but that doesnt mean I find said things "offensive" or unenjoyable.

I thought it was okay. I didn't like how Eli was so good in combat. Even Batman would have trouble facing the number of people Eli faced in the bar if he was in the same situation and he's friggin Batman.

Umm...

Did God tell Bruce Wayne that he couldnt be harmed as long as he was in possesion of the book? And you may say, he got shot... but that is what allowed him to make it to complete his task. That and he handed it over physically.

I thought the movie was awesome.

I Don't think I will see it too many times but for being unspoiled and having to take it all in... I just loved it.

I enjoyed the movie despite it being a bit too preachy... and well, more than a little far fetched.

I figured out he was blind long before the reveal.. a little too obvious. I don't buy that he remembered the entire bible and was able to recite it verbatim... that and a blind man whooping ass as much as he did.

Read my above spoiler...

The whole point in him being able to go above and beyond was faith. If there is a God... thats how.

I found the shampoo thing yet he had an ipod to be WAY more far fetched. Borderline water worldy. Though I hate to say that cause I really did love this movie.

While I did find it a stretch, I can also see it being possible. He did say that he was walking for 30 years and read it everyday

He had 30 years of reading it to learn it by heart. If you spent 30 years reading the same book, every day, you'd be able to recite it line by line too.

They had me until the ending when Mila left the saftey and comfort of Alcatraz to go home and fight. This is a girl who just a little while ago almost got raped and now suddenly she's a bad-ass crime fighter? I find it very hard to believe that she would leave the safe zone to go home. I was also hoping for more of a confrontation between Oldman and Washington.

just got home from seeing it, and i LOVED it, i thought it was a really good movie, and i didnt see the twist coming up at all. ill definitely be buying it on dvd when it comes out, and now i REALLY wish i had the skill/tools to make the machete!

So if he stood there and did nothing, he would have been fine since he has the book? Sorry, I don't buy it. Faith is one thing, but Eli had skills that any fighter would dream of having.

Actually that's in some ways true. He was walking away from he governor who wanted the book and the governor told his head thug to kill Eli. The thug took two very carefully aimed shots at Eli and missed each times. It was clear that at that point something was protecting him. The only time he was hurt was when he agreed to turn over the book to someone who shouldn't have it. He got shot in the gut after that, his punishment for 'disobeying God' if you will. God let him finish his mission, but he died afterword for losing faith at that one point.

Except I was referring specifically to the bar scene. That wasn't faith that made him win the fight, that was years of melee combat training. What happens if he did nothing there? Faith can only take you so far.
