The Batman

Is this supposed to be a prequel to Affleck's Batman? A sequel to Joker? I can't figure out what DC is doing with these movies.
It doesn't look terrible but it doesn't look great either. I tried watching Burton's Batman a few days ago and couldn't get past the two crooks he beats up (yet doesn't stop, arrest or reclaim stolen property from) at the beginning.
Batman in film has become a suit and a car first and a character 2nd. I'd love to see Batman using his superior intellect to actually stop crime rather than showing up after the fact and seeking revenge. Having the character played like Adam West did without the camp, intelligent, serious, physically capable and most importantly.. not a slave to his emotional state!
Of course that will never happen so I'll probably check this out, at the very least the car looks really good.

Well, Joker was supposedly a complete separate, stand alone thing and not tied to anything else. FFS, even Adam West's Batman at 70 years old can probably beat down that joker. He wasnt' a master of anything.

After looking at that trailer, everything looks pretty good - except emo/goth bruce. That didn't look good at all.

I read yesterday that it is a stand-alone film, completely independent from any other DC films.

Yeah, nothing is really tied to anything else like with Marvel. I don't mind that. In fact, I like that. Being able to tell stories in alternate versions of established lore is a compelling thing. DC did the Elseworlds books for years, and have always been presenting different versions of their tentpole characters in animation format, etc.

I enjoyed a lot of this teaser. I'll give the film a shot. Geoffrey Wright works for me as Gordon. Visuals looks great. I mostly like the suit, in a Gotham by Gaslight kind of way. I would not be surprised is the film ends with him in a more traditional costume. But Pattinson is exactly what I expected, and that's too bad. I know this is supposed to be a "Year 2" Batman story or something, but that line about vengeance actually made me laugh out loud. That sounded really weak. Didn't land for me, at all. His emo kid look kind of reminds me of Cobblepot from the Gotham TV show.

But we'll see how it works in the film.

The Bat is back, and he's pissed! I like that it looks like we're getting a good mix of "Imma beat the piss outta you" Batman AND "World's Greatest Detective" Batman! Pattinson is perfect for this role. After seeing him in "The Lighthouse," I knew he would be. I. AM. FREAKING. PUMPED!

I think it's because he just took the mask off, so he still has the eyeliner on, and his hair is all sweaty.

Yea, it's the grease around the eyes for matching the cowl. I'm not sure what else folks are calling emo.

That he's sad and upset at a funeral where someone just drove a car through a crowd?
When he's trying to intimidate street gangs by telling them he's vengeance?

I don't know what is terribly emo about the character (I mean, beyond the standard batman stock of being a quiet loner in a dark cave, but that's every batman. lol).

It takes Batman 10 strikes (I counted) to put the clown down. Then 2 more to ensure he stays there. That's poor.

Emo Bruce Wayne is really bad.

Batman looks like a spare part in that crime scene, like its a scene at a costume party and he hasnt left yet.

Still not liking the suit.

Well, as far as I know, no superhero movie with an emo main character has ever disappointed fans...

...eh, maybe the new Batsuit will be revealed to be a symbiotic being that will peel off of him and become Man-Bat?

...or, perhaps Batman will finally bring Biff his comeuppance?

Watch again - he's hanging onto the guy. It may have only taken one or two blows to drop him. The repeated pummeling and then the arm break before he releases him - and then the continued bashing after he LETS him drop - shows that he's possibly working out some anger issues.
I interpret it as him putting the rest of that guy's crew on notice--"**** with me, and you're next."

This looks better than I thought it would but, so far, not by much. I've only seen Pattinson in one movie--the first Twilight movie (not my idea)--and wasn't particularly impressed. I hope he'll change my mind in this one.

A friend at work reminded me that Paul Dano is the Riddler. That guy is phenomenal. I'm very intrigued now....

100%, and I’m kinda surprised there’s not more talk about it. Dano is a weirdo...in a very good way...and I think he’s going to make a fantastic Riddler.

The Crow.... is amazing. Still holds up with the best of all the comic book movies.

I just find it funny that people are referring to Batman as "emo" when the character is known for brooding. He's not exactly sunshine and rainbows. Now I can see the complaint with having Superman act like that because that's not the core of the character, but with Batman, it's essential. I mean the guy devoted his life to being a vigilante after watching his parents murdered right in front of him. I'd say that's enough to ruin someone's life, or in the most extreme case (become a vigilante.)

Its the moody emo teenager look, dark hair, aye covering quiff.
I have no issues with Batman/Bruce being brooding or stern with anger, but this guy looks like he'd burst into tears if you asked him to clean his room.
An eye-covering quiff is nothing new to Batman. Just look at Christian Bale's hair in the Dark Knight Rises.

You can't make everyone happy. Some people are crying that Batman in BvS was okay with colleteral damages while cheering to the 89 Batman, who was a cruel psychopathic killer.

Now we've got Pattinson as a younger Bruce Wayne and he maybe looks like an emo kid.

To be clear, my beef isn't with the eye shadow or the hair. When I look at Pattinson I still see a kid who hasn't filled out. I just don't think he's got an imposing enough frame to be the Batman as he's usually depicted, which makes him look like a guy in expensive cosplay to me. I'm sure he's a fine actor, I've not seen anything he's in since Goblet of Fire though.

Batman in film has been a surprise on many levels. While I was too young when the 89 Batman came out to know that Keaton was a controversial choice among comic fans, he ended up being great in the role. I had the same reaction to hearing about Heath Ledger as the Joker and he knocked it out of the park. Ben Affleck was not an ideal choice for Batman when he was first announced and while I hated Batman vs. Superman, Affleck was better than I expected him to be. There are lots of instances where creative choices with this character and franchise have taken me by surprise. I thought the Tumbler was hideous until I saw what it could do and now I love it. So when it comes to this I'm willing to give it a chance and equally willing to see what Pattinson brings to the role.

He fills out the suit enough for me. I mean, sure, he's not Batfleck with a padded belly, but I never liked that look anyway. The "bugling over muscled meathead" look was never something I could get on board with. This feels more grounded. This guy you could believe uses being a CEO as a cover. I mean, let's face it, how many CEOs have this body:
