the alien in Predators

Besides, why would you WANT that creature to look like the old one? That design sucks! The river ghost creature is a lot cooler!

One of the reasons why I liked P1 so much (and I am one of the few here on the forum who saw it in the theater, three times, back in 1987) is because it was one of the first aliens to appear in film that was incredibly realistic (one of the others being, of course, the xeno in Alien--which was alas only visible in the film for maybe two minutes total, and then mostly as headshots). The Predator looked cool as hell even with its bio mask on, but in that glorious scene where it de-masked, I was utterly floored. The four mandibles, the dreads, the fluorescent blood--nothing like these had ever been seen on film before. It was stunningly impressive. Even with today's CGI, we could not get that level of realistic detail--which is I suppose why "Predators" was made using suits, not with CGI.

hmmm interesting design, looks like influences from several sci-fi related creatures.

maybe one to sculpt for the future to add to a trophy wall

All that beautiful work, and we don't even see the alien long enough to appreciate it, just like the falcon.....don't get me started! In fact, the running alien seemed like an afterthought in the film---like they just stuck it in there---no context. The film could have been so much more....*sigh* Looking at the photos in Chris' link above, the details of the P1 KNB did is further away from screen accuracy with the original than I thought. Looks good though, love those classic lines.

So . . . that thing was the original Pred concept? I'm frikkin glad Mr. Winston made a better version. Thank God to your artistic talent, Sir!

During the chase I thought it was the pumpkinhead...

the suit seems to have a bit of inspiration on guyver to me

LOL, yeah man, you're right... The film could've used some more loving, and some loose ends could've been tied down.
But the P1 was far from accurate, far less subtle than the original ever was. Good sculpt though, just quick and stylized.

U sure bro? 'Cuz that's what Jedhinthwei said. :)

The predator pictures you see on the first page from the 1980s are the original design for predator. The pictures from the newly released PREDATORS, is not. People keep saying it is the orginal design just because they want an easter egg from, "what could have been." All it is, is a design made my knb effects to introduce Nolan, or show that they bring other live prey on the hunting ground, not just humans. The alien you see from predators is not the orginal design from predator 1, period.

Ya that really bugged me too. It's liek they give you a taste of this rich, fleshed out world, and then jsut throw it away. PErsonally, I found it distracting. I mean *I* got what was going, but I would imagine someone who isn't that caught up on Pred lore, would wonder how this mosnter was related. It was a total red herring, story wise, and the empty crates were kind of wasted too. I would have loved to see more "prey" and less "Samurai Showdown".

The creature chasing Topher is a hugely better design than the "Super Black Predator" head sculpt could ever try to be.

I hated the SBP head when I saw the production photos (thinking it looked more like a "Power Rangers Villain" instead of a Pred), hated it again when I saw the movie in the theater, and again when I saw the movie earlier this week at home. Now I like most everything Predator, but to me the SBP sculpt is NOT anything resembling a Predator, except it just happens to have dreads and mandibles.

My 2 cents. You don't have to agree.....I just really hate that head sculpt. I'd rather wear a Rubies mask than the screen-used SBP mask any day of the week.

Not as an artist, but simply as a Pred head, I agree with this. I like that RR took this to the edge to provide something never seen before, but IMO I hope it goes away for good now. The Bio masks were all tight, but the SBP face was not "predatoresque", and if/when there is another Predator movie, I hope they stick with tried and true :)
