After seeing the movie, I’ve grown a bit of a liking to the new Luke Skywalker. Since I already have the right build and facial hair (to include proper facial hair color), I’m going to focus on building this costume.
Looking at the cut and material as it appears on screen, it looks that they based this costume on his Return of the Jedi series of outfits, but lengthened and lightened them in places. Effectively, he went from a Space Priest costume to the Space Pope costume (my apologies for the blasphemy to the Papal Mainframe). So, I am going with that for the basis of my build.
Shirt
Luke’s shirt is made from white wool gabardine. It has the mandarin collar and bib that the ROTJ shirt includes. In addition, I noticed a set of hidden zippers which closed the cuffs around his wrists. Those cuffs are the full length of the zippers and top stitched.
Trousers
I don’t know the color or material of the trousers, but I am assuming that it is white or light. For that reason, I’m going to use a pair of cloud colored, relaxed-fit, khaki’s. One thing that I did notice in the image I posted above is that his pant legs are not tucked into his boots. You can see the bottom in front of his boot in the shot. Though, for the sake of costuming, I’ll tuck them into my boots to fit in with everyone else.
Outer Tunic
For the outer tunic, I’m going all out and making it out of Silk Matka fabric. I have several swatches ordered to match them to the outer tunic color from the movie stills floating around, so I won’t guess the color. It’s sleeveless and stops above the ankle (two to three inches). Like the ROTJ vest, it also closes just at the belt. I’m guessing its open edge continues diagonally since it doesn’t really open in the movie.
Tabards
Luke’s tabards are also Silk Matka, but of a different shade than the outer tunic. They are lighter and look to be either white or natural (probably natural since his shirt is white). They’re stole style around the back of the neck and are tacked down at the armpit (I’ll use snaps for ease of cleaning). I say this because they have the exact same fall as the ROTJ tabards.
Obi
The obi is the same color as the outer tunic. It’ll be 4” wide and made identically to the ROTJ Obi.
Belt
The belt looks almost identical to the ROTJ belt, with three main differences. First, the belt is 3” wide rather than 2. Second, the buckle is an oval rather than an octagon. Finally, the belt is brown rather than black. Otherwise, it has the same style pouch as the ROTJ over the left hip, though I’ll be adding a second pouch worn at the rear to hold my wallet and keys.
Cloak
Luke’s cloak is wool crepe and darker than the outer tunic, but not quite brown. It has a wide “generic Jedi” hood and falls to floor length. It is also tacked down at the same location as the tabards to keep it in place (again, I’ll be using snaps for the same reason as the tabards).
Boots
The boots look very similar to the style of boots worn by Rey. In that, I mean the tow and sole are very Ugg-like. Since there is no raise along the sole to indicate a heel, I’ll be going with the Ugg boot option until a better image of the boots can be found. What I can tell is that they are a faded brown or gray and distressed/weathered.
Hand
Luke’s right hand went full automail (i.e. Full Metal Alchemist). I plan to use a glove and 1mm sintra plates to recreate the hand as best as possible while still retaining the ability to hold a lightsaber.
Lightsaber
The leaked figure shots of Luke show him to have his ROTJ lightsaber, though it is aged and weathered. My only “inaccuracy” will be to have a round D-ring rather than the triangle for comfort hanging on the belt. Oh, and it will only be a belt-hanger for now.
Hair
My beard looks identical to Mark Hamill’s in the movie. The only problem is my hair, by that I mean I don’t have any. My fix is going to be a wig made to look ROTS Anakin-style. I’ll have a hairdresser friend of mine trim it to look like the movie.
----------
The above will be my ultimate and final build, but not my first. The layers of wool and silk make for a great winter costume, but make for summer heat stroke. For that reason, my version 1 of the costume will be made of a white cotton twill inner tunic, dyed/natural raw silk outer tunic/tabards/obi, and cotton suiting burlap cloak (yes, there is such a fabric if you know about Ren Faire garb).
This is going to be a rather expensive build, but my first canon face character ever (I had a Vader, but he wasn’t faced). It is going to be very rewarding. After it’s complete, I’ll update it as more information comes out regarding Luke’s costume and then again for Episode VIII, if he’s in it (which I have a strong feeling he will be).
I’ll be dropping pictures into this WIP as I get in the fabric and what-not. All I have to say is, may the Force be with me.
