TFA Luke Skywalker WIP

Flagwaver,

as mentioned previously these are details from official Luke pic i bought from SWCE last weekend. I have cropped the images to just show the boots and wraps, and the belt as unsure about copyright infringement.

I hope that these are helpful. Also a costume that I am now seriously considering making, as my Ben Kenobi Tatooine nomad is getting a tad tired - although that adds to authenticity :) I've included links to Photobucket images.

I'm doing this for Salt Lake Comic Con in September. I'm really worried about the hand. I'm not sure what to do. Any examples? Ideas?

I made my leg wraps from bandages and dyed them a sand color to match the pants and bootd

So I am working on putting a quote together for a client and thought I would share my thoughts on fabric. For the Cape I am going to get this http://www.dharmatrading.com/fabric/handspun-handwoven-natural-fabric.html?lnav=fabric.html and possible tea dye it or straight dye it. The the pants, robes and tabards are going to be this also dyed http://www.dharmatrading.com/fabric/55-linen-45-rayon-blend-52-inch.html?lnav=fabric.html and for the shirt I am going to use the wrong side of this http://www.dharmatrading.com/fabric/rayon-satin.html?lnav=fabric.html I have swatches already and find the wrong side looks right.

The linen/rayon is good, but it is really thin. I'm just going with the raw silk and the sand dune dye. I had the same idea with the cloak, though.

It has been a while, but I'm now in a better position to actually build this thing. To that end, I just purchased 20 yards of raw silk and the sand dune dye. Along with that, I picked up a pair of all-leather flight gloves and a leather painting kit. So, what do I have and what do I need...

Shirt: Have everything, need to assemble.
Robe: Waiting on the fabric, need to assemble.
Stole: Waiting on the fabric, need to assemble.
Obi: Waiting on the fabric, need to assemble.
Trousers: Waiting on the fabric, need to assemble.
Belt: Have everything, need to assemble.
Cloak: Need fabric, need to assemble.
Boots: Need boots, waiting on the fabric, need to assemble.
Hand: Waiting on gloves and paint, need to paint, need to assemble.
Hair: Need wig.
Beard: Fully assembled and installed.

Well, it arrived. The majority of this will be used for my Luke. Trousers, outer tunic, stole, obi, and puttees. 20 yards in total, but there will be some left over for other projects/orders.

So I am beyond green when it comes to any sort of legitimate cosplaying, but I have been a diehard SW fan for 20 years, and actually just middle-named my newborn daughter Rey, and will be building her a growing costume for her. I want to start off my cosplay portfolio on the right foot and decided to go with TFA Luke, which brought me to this thread. And all I can say is I wish I had gotten started on this sooner! It's incredible to watch and read all of your input and to see the incredible work you all do.

I want to have a working starter version of this together before Halloween this year, but have literally no experience with making patterns or acquiring proper fabrics. This may be a huge stab in the dark, but would anyone be willing to go into a little detail for more and perhaps provide some links to tutorials or resources that would help me get the ball rolling?

So far the only things I have working for me are a beard that I will shape and dye and a link to a half decent wig made by Arda called the Hansel which I will stress and dye a bit as well.

I need to darken/weather the cloak and get the belt and hand done, but thus far I'm quite happy with how this is coming along!

So I'm working on the hand for a client- I'll post picks as I go(I have to post them on a pic sharing site and then post the link? Right?). I'm planning on just using e6000 to get a bunch of wires (different colors, washed black) tacked down over the fingers and then wet form some leather plates and paint them silver; use e6000 on those to apply them as well, would love to hear about other folks builds on this piece!

The "Kylo-esque" trim on the belt, I believe IS seen down, not just glued. At the very least, you can see that there is a groove gouged into each trim piece in some of the pics. Also yes, someone mentioned "opera straps" coming off the robe, going under the arm and I'd have to agree. At the very least, it's definitely not a seam we are seeing, because in one of the pics above, you can see that it goes across his tabards.

So I have been working on and off with this project for about a month now, and have thoroughly enjoyed the work-in-process. It has been a lot of trail, and even more error, but it's such an exciting process, I think I'm hooked for life! Here are some snapshots of pieces that are mostly finished. I am still working on the fabrics (as I have no sewing experience whatsoever) but the other elements have been pretty straightforward.

I've actually been using mostly released photos and screenshots from ep8 instead of ep7 exclusively, as I like the more rugged hermit appearance they seem to have gone with. Here is a close up from the ep8 production teaser,

and here's where I'm at so far

.

I went with the Skyelar wig from Arda Wigs and cut/feathered the bangs back a bit to match the look from the screenshot. I purchased the Desert Brown color, but still need to add some gray and white highlights. The beard will get trimmed more on the cheeks and grown out on the goatee area, but after some trial and error I have decided to use standard white grease paint applied with a paintbrush for the white in the beard. The spray on stuff is just way too messy and uncontrollable, plus the grease paint doesn't get dry and flaky and it comes right it with hot water. When I wear the outfit I will also apply some wrinkles and blemishes for effect using makeup as well.

The belt has been an adventure, and many times I've wanted to just start over but a limited budget requires me to be more persistent.

I cut and punched the holes then saddle stitched the outer edges together. I used Canola oil for the initial tanning which looked great, but I learned the hard way that you must apply the oil by hand spot by spot, you can't just dump it all into a pan and then run the belt through it. I was draining oil out of it for a week. Once it dried out I used a dark down dye by hand and some nail polish remover to blend it together. All the same process for the pouch as well, which will probably get redone when I can afford it. The buckle is actually a blank rectangle buckle purchased from Tandy Leather, shaped with a dremel, and then painted with 4 kinds of spray paint that i actually dry brushed on with an old brush. The "hammered" finish stuff looks really, really cool for this application. I affixed it to the belt using the back plate to a magnetic nametag which is lashed to the center of the belt. I have been taking the buckle of and storing it in the pouch to keep it from getting scratched.

Last update for now is the hand. I wanted to take a more complex route but the budget wouldn't allow for now.

I purchased a set of plain black "heavy duty" gloves from home improvement store and cut off ask the identifying marks. The hand plate and finger plates are all cut from a light gauge aluminum that is pliable by hand but not fragile enough to wrinkle or crinkle and then sprayed with a similar treatment asset the buckle. The wires are gorilla taped to the hand plate, which is super glued to the cut off wrist band from the extra left glove. The finger plates actually flex and just clamp down around the wires in their places, so there is some assembly required, but it allows for more dexterity.

I hope to have the fabric elements done by this time next week, and well post more updates then.

May the Force be with you all!

Here's a brief update with my fabric elements so far.

The cloak was originally a dark brown, I used 4 Rit color remover packs and it got to here, but it definitely needs to be lighter. I may also use one of those packs on the outer tunic and tabbards and obi as well, they are a little too tan right now.

(Please forgive the tub shot, my late night work space is limited...)
The pants I got from Goodwill and used very diluted acrylic paint in a spray bottle to gently stain the legs to look worn out. The boots are Walmart fake uggs that have been spray painted and then sanded and the leg wraps are actually strips of the same cloak material that were bleached to oblivion and then got the same diluted acrylic spray treatment. Getting closer to wearable...

Really cool! I like the hand, it reminds me of Ash's hand in Army of Darkness!
