Don't get snarky. No we can't totally predict behavior, but they are actual words that have actual definitions.

We aren't actors here (well most probably) but it's quite easy to see how unnerving things like that might be on set, and they're creating art. I think he's created a unique approach to bring the production together - even if people get pissed off/worried with it - that's kind of the point? You don't just want to be laughing along with the joker. He should be legitimately terrifying/unpredictable. If that translates some of those feelings to the screen (which a chunk of the cast has alluded to) then fair play. It's just different. In an office setting, in an engineering company? Definitely not. It's unprofessional and wouldn't make sense. In theatre/acting? It's out there, but it's probably the only place you can get away with that sort of thing.

This is completely beside the point. In fact not even loosely related to what I was saying. But since you brought it up: No. I'm not an actor, but I am involved with the theater and movie world...I have degrees in both theater and animation, plus 20 years experience between them. In fact, it's not fair play. Also I don't know how many engineers you know, but those guys are nuts.

It IS something you get away with if it would cost the company millions of dollars to chastise you...so, if you're Jared Leto...or the CEO of multimillion dollar client of said engineering firm...yes, out there but doable. For everyone else trying to do their jobs? It will get you fired and probably in some cases sued. This isn't an "Actors are weird" thing...it's a "Rich powerful people get to do things the rest of us would be arrested for" thing.

Still beside the point: I have no opinion on such antics in general.

Claiming "the wrong character" before even seeing the film, about a character that has a multiple choice origin and many, many interesting and varied facets...and taking into account you don't know this specific character yet, his motivations, his goals in the film etc. Give things a chance to stand before tearing it down.

And here's where you fall off the cliff. That's what a trailer IS...to make someone WANT to see more. That's the entire reason for it's existence: so that we'll give it a chance. And a trailer is WAAAAAAAAAAAY easier to make than a feature by the way. In this case, I looked at the trailer and said "Nah"...now you, apparently...it HAS worked on. Great! Go see it, I'm sure you'll like it, since you're going in set on liking it. Be sure to tell me about it afterwards. I WILL read what you write, I promise.

For now, we both saw something and we BOTH passed some sort of judgement on it. It was intended to make us want more. It didn't work on me. It's a binary question...yes going to see the movie, or no not. Neither existential, nor philosophical, and deciding "not" is not some sort of character flaw. It's just a decision not to pay for more of something I didn't care for the taste of.



Now...after you see it, MAYBE then you can say "It's better than the pile of crap we saw before it came out! Give it a chance" and we'll think "Maybe he's right, I just saw a couple minutes, maybe it stands up on longer viewing" but for now..you haven't seen it either! You're also making a judgment based on a trailer WHILE chastising others for doing just that!


edit: but let's skip to what really prompted my comment, rather than the symptoms (antics) look at the cause (my right or wrong impression of the character choices): from the beginning, it SEEMS like Leto is playing a certain character. Honestly at first I thought it was a hoax...that someone on the internet had badly photoshopped an old pic of Leto screaming just to bash the film. I thought it was unfair, but it turns out it was real. That is the look and character choices.

Now there's two possibilities: that is what the character will be like or it isn't.

Assuming it isn't: they did a TERRIBLE job and really need to talk to their people. They've conveyed something not once, but repeatedly. If the movie ends up being totally different...then more than one person involved needs to be fired.

Assume it is: it's not a character I like. I know you think maybe in context, but no...there's no context in which I would like that. It's not a gangster character it's 'gangsta' . It's not calculating it's quirky...and there's nothing wrong with that. Some people WILL like that. It's just not for me and context wont change that. It's also not wrong for me to give my reasons. In fact, having stated a preference, I submit that I SHOULD be giving my reasons.

And everything new we see just confirms that that is, in fact, the direction of the character. These antics are another example: he's is playing him that way and it's definitely not for me.

that last sentence is how I Feel about Ledgers joker. it was NOTHING like how I picture the 'real' joker. the only scene that felt like the 'real' joker was where he's walking away in a nurses outfit and waits for the hospital explosion. The rest, he was just some random lunatic screaming and yelling intensely.

for me, Nicholson was a pretty good live action modern joker. Mark Hamil was the ONLY animated joker.

so far, all i've seen of this leto version...when I can stand to look at the ugliness....i'm not buying it.

I actually agree with this. I like Ledger's version, but not as an adaptation of the Joker, more as a weird Alternate universe Nolan version where everything is different and twisted. Ledger was creepy and awesome and stuff, but nowhere near the real Joker. Honestly, I think that Aaron Eckhart's portrayal of Harvey Dent blew Ledger out of the water. His story was deep, tragic and well thought out. His motivation made sense in the context of the story and with what happened to him. It was close enough to Comic accurate to be accepted as actually being Two-Face. I honestly think that other than his ridiculous visual design, Jared Leto's version will be more Comic accurate than we've ever seen. If the small aspects of the design that don't match the real Joker (metal teeth, tattoos, weird pimp clothes) were scrapped, he would even look better than Ledger's Joker.

Completely fair points man, I was on a bit of a rant there, my apologies.

It does come from a good(ish) place though - being a fan of the DCEU at this stage is quite the challenge, especially if you also enjoy discussion about the material prior to release - such a negative buzz is so prevalent I forget that some people's opinions are genuine and formed from a place of honesty.

I was indeed being a bit of a hypocrite. Get too caught up in defending something - just trying to come from a place of positivity is all!

Edit: I'm an Engineer - no dead hogs on my desk any time soon! haha. And my reasoning for mentioning that we aren't actors (ignorant of me, but probably correct for the majority of posters) was to try and create a framework for why I disagreed with your statements about it being Leto's version of trying to be "edgy" - and that was my interpretation of why he did those things - again, highlighting our different starting points I suppose.

Whilst I won't rise to being the "new breed", I haven't said any of that about the "wait for trailer, no wait for film" - my opinion so far has been pretty positive throughout the entire ad campaign, it has me on the hook - I think the only thing that I am not particularly happy about is Katana - whilst she looks good, I just don't get any sense that she will play much of a role - same with Slipknot. I'm happy to be proven wrong.

I only said not to tear something down, and that's because I think it's far, far easier to be negative about something, rather than allow ourselves to be positive about it - by taking our time, judging something properly and logically. Or even neutral. I don't even think neutral exists anymore, which is a real shame, because you can really only judge something truthfully if you're objective, but being objective pretty much precludes hating or loving something I think. Not impossible, but certainly not easy.

I have broken down many moments within what I class as my favourite films or TV shows and am totally happy to say that they arent good enough, or could have been improved by x y and z. But I try to ensure that I've taken the time to fully appreciate what has been shown to me first. And if I can get further enjoyment from a film by discussing it, analysing it etc then all the better for it. I don't always want a 2 hour wham and done. I want some meat to chew.

Afterall, I'd much rather ensure that I have the best chance of enjoying something, than feel disgruntled and hate something on a whim. Understanding more and more about the film process, storytelling and other stuff I've been learning about lately has improved my enjoyment of many things no end lately.

Mark hamill is indeed the best when it comes to being the joker in animated versions but troy baker is def a worthy successor and not mentioned enough. The monologue starts at 1:20 which shows just how good he is.

As for Leto not gonna go into a debat with that since i like it and to each their own opinion

Almost my identical thought when I read that too. He is emulating, but he does such a good job - phenomenal voice talent.

What are some of your favorite movies and TV shows?

Current shows have a bit a variation - Orphan Black, The Flash, Agents of Shield, House of Cards, Game of Thrones, Sherlock etc. Previous shows have included House MD, True Detective, Misfits, Elementary, Hannibal and such. Many more.

I think the example you're possibly probing for is for me finding fault with a favourite show? I think my best example is Elementary. Season 1 and 2 of that show were absolutely brilliant - even then, the formula of crime of the week was not the strongest part of the show, and I thought that might put me off, even Season 3 had its strengths - and that is after I had become accustomed to BBC's Sherlock, and having read most of the originals from Mr Doyle. And yet Season 4, I am utterly apathetic about. To the point that it has become almost difficult to try and entertain an episode - it's painfully formulaic now, there is no overarching plot that is remotely worthy of being invested in, and I'm genuinely disappointed with the show. I gave it chances of course, and came back for a few episodes but have now entirely given up. I'll probably put them on at some point when I've run out of good shows in a dead spot. And I hate that it has gone that way, because it used to be a proper highlight show for me - one of the strongest character moments on TV I've seen is when Sherlock is at a meeting, and is asked to share - his response was perfectly written, , and Jonny Lee Miller absolutely nailed it.

Sad that DC/WB has so many people second guessing these films, they should be easy sells. However, this latest trailer is an improvement, and Leto's acting may redeem the design somewhat.

I'm still not sure I want to see BVS, $7.00 ticket now and I'm apprehensive about this Suicide Squad.

And let's not pretend that this "method" acting requires such extreme dedication. Wasn't this part of the reason Ledger is gone? Also, Leto's antics are just outright disgusting. Not too different from Die Antwoord's antics on Chappie, but seriously, that Davis lady in charge of them wasn't having that ****.

Definitely one of the best, he was a perfect balance of insane, menacing, funny and deadly. His scenes were among the best in all of Gotham so far. I desperately wanted to see him in Joker make up haha!
