studio scale X-wing

Beautiful work, its a real pleasure to look through the pics. I'd love to know what you did on some of the weathering. Really ace paintwork.

thanks again

you asked for some "secrets" and "how to do it" about the paintjob so here goes.

paints used.

the white basecolor was. Humbrol 34 white and Humbrol 28 grey. 80/20%.
yellow areas. Humbrol 24 and 154. 50/50%.
red markings.Humbrol 60-Humbrol 153-Humbrol 100 .45/45/10%.
Cockpit. modelmaster 78 Hellblau-Humbrol 65.50/50%.

all colors i used was flat colors and no primer was used, the base white was sprayed directly on the model.

All paintchipping on yellow and red areas was painted with brush with the base "white" color, and the chipping on white areas was done with black paint.

the fading effect on the yellow and grey areas was done by wiping it over with enemal thinner after having sat aprox 24 hours,in that process i was very carefull to use a clean cloth and not messing the yellow paint out on the white surface ruining the hard edge outlines.

this was followed by and overall wash of thinned Humbrol 28 grey and a wash of Humbrol 33 black in the panellines.

hope it answars a few of your questions:rolleyes

looks awesome. i have never built or painted a model , i make costumes , but i can see the skill that goes into the building and painting these studio scale models.

nice work.

Yellow on the nose doesn't look faded at all. Looks too rich/bright.

Being blunt tonight - its Friday; been drinkin'...

This post is out of character for me, and I apologize if I was insensitively direct.

Color choice is always a matter of personal opinion and interpretation.

I've always taken the yellow of Red 2 as a more washed out, yellow ochre. But that's just me.

Your work is stunning. Regardless of color, (which really is not a matter or "right or wrong"), the weathering and degree of "beating down" of the finish is superb.

TOP NOTCH WORK!!!!

I love your weathering job, only a few here impress me, realistic weathering is hard to achieve, it either ruins or enhances the model

no worries m8

this model was never intended to be 100% studio scale with the right paints used, but i did try to make it look like the studioscale red two.
you are proberbly right about the yellow colors one the nose , but i only have a few closeup reference pictures of the studio scale model and i have never seen it in rl so i just painted it the best i know.
anyway, no need for apologize , a little critic is always welcome;)

Folks, take note of BO's amazing Wing Mechanism.

He MADE those.

I have a set, and they are gorgeous!!

I was just wondering if you could tell me what those pieces that slide onto the pipe in your armature setup called? I just ordered some supplies to make my own but I have no idea what they are called. Any help would be appreciated.

hi mate

i dont know what they are called, i made them from 10mm x 30mm aluminum.
the axle in the x mechanisme is 16 mm and the hole in the aluminum peices is 16.1mm.
the 4 aluminum pieces for the wingmount are 20.5mm x 28mm x 3mm.

Thanks for the measurments for the wing mount pieces. This will save me some time of figuring out dimensions. I'm either going to machine the pieces or try casting them from an epoxy resin.
