Stormtrooper Oddities

All of the shoulders bells in that photo seem to be trimmed a little differently.

a little?

id say completely, one is longer on the inside, the other longer on the outside...

this is why its IMPOSSIBLE to define a "perfect" ANH trooper. they are ALL random...

You're kidding, right?

Here's a strange one...

ESB_troopers.jpg

Note that the middle trooper's ab-plate has the buttons upside-down in the ROTJ style layout. Whoever trimmed this particular suit must've been looking out the window when he was sticking the ab-button panel onto the ab-plate. :lol

Here's the same trooper again with Carrie Fisher at the ESB UK premiere...

My theory is, that 2 years later when Berman & Nathans / I.L.M. came to fabricate the ROTJ trooper suits they pulled an ESB suit out of storage to use as a guidline for assembly and trimming... and guess which one they unpacked.... ;)

Interesting also that my original ROTJ *studio* background stormtrooper helmet has ESB-style decals and resin-cast Hovi-mix aerators... unlike the *location* suits used in the Endor scenes...
Don't want to hijack the thread, but I reckon there's a good chance that B&N finsihed the UK *studio* trooper costumes for ROTJ, by using an ESB suit as a guideline...

Discuss..... ;)

Cheers,
John

This guy/suit is also here in this promo shot, wearing an ANH hero helmet with a 4 "teeth" frown, ESB decals, and repainted mouth .

My 'theory' is that this helmet (after total reconditioning)
might be the ESB hero we were discussing in another thread:trooper ranking

That would include that this promo shot was done before the shooting of ESB of course. :lol

I would say that this pic was taken after ROTJ as the one on Vaders left is a repainted ROTJ suit. Why it has been painted ANH I don't know, but it's definately ROTJ.I have the full size poster here.

The other trooper is ESB,and you can tell by the handguards that are sewn onto the gloves and of course the helmet decals, black mouth and holster attached on his right hand side.

-Paul. :)

Paul,

I've studied ESB troopers a lot, maybe not as much as you studied ANH ones :lol

but all ESB troopers do not have the handguards sewn onto the gloves.

Vader is also ESB(i think, maybe i'm blind), but in the pic the only thing ROTJ

i see is the AB plate's buttons upside down, which John/Stormtrooper has clearly

shown was in ESB as well, and a beat up shoulder bell.

Yeah, not all have the hands sewn on,but if you see the little black lines on 'some' of them, then they are sewn on.

I don't know anything about the Vader, but that trooper is ROTJ.It has the thin ear caps and the right tube is pinched at the bottom of the ear cap.It has the rubber edging/moulding on the main body sections, moulded overlaps in the arms and the rounded shoulder bell bottoms.I can really see the ab box clearly enough but looks moulded into the plate ala ROTJ.

I did have a massive pic on my old comp but unfortunatley it's gone :(

The suit is clearly an ROTJ to me,just the helmet is painted up with a grey mouth.

That Promo shot is definitely from the ESB era. From back in the day:

I also had that pic on a notebook for school.

Interesting.......

Anyone know just when exactly the suits for ROTJ were made? Maybe they were made straight after filming ESB or even during, but that suit is the same as the ones used in ROTJ no matter when the pic was taken.

Oddly enough,I have seen a trooper in ESB with the edging trim on the armour,so they must have been 'playing' with the armour early on.

Either way,the armour on each of the troopers is different and that is a fact.

-Paul.

It has the thin ear caps

I agree with the edging trim on ESB armor and the fact that they played around with the suits but thin ear caps are not exclusive to ROTJ helmets.

No offense Paul, as i respect the man and his work, (i love your/my ESB Christies) but i don't think for one sec that the helmet is a black frown ROTJ refurbished into ANH .

The armors are indeed different.

Cheers

Hey HDPE,that's cool buddy. We are here to discuss these things, and it would be boring if we all agreed on the same thing. :p

There is a high-res pic on the 'sandtrooper CD' from braksbuddy if anyone has it.I do but I have lent it out.

But just looking at that helmet screams ROTJ to me.It has that squashed look and long dome/forehead thing going on.Has the bubbled lense and four holes/teeth cut out.

We shall see........

Ask and ye shall receive.... ;)

Hi-Res Pic of Vader & Troopers

I've posted it on my webspace for a couple of days and then it'll have to come down as it takes up a fair bit of space at 3 MB.

......And lookee here... they've got ESB 'stunt' blasters :D

[image]http://www.manicminer.plus.com/ESB_Promo_blaster.jpg[/image]

Impossible to see in the following pic taking during a promotional pic from 1983 (ROTJ era) but the trooper in the foreground has his ROTJ helmet repainted in ANH colours... including grey frown and ONE vertical stripe on the grey rectangle ear-cover thingy. Weird :confused

[image]http://www.manicminer.plus.com/HarrodsTroopers.jpg[/image]

Could be the ROTJ prototype / reworked ANH Hero from the original pic???

The original print of this photo is in the Star Wars Scrapbook by Steve Sansweet, and trust me it's painted like an ANH helmet... shame my scanner's on the fritz or I could do a hi-res scan....

Cheers,
John

Yeah I forgot about that 'London' pic.Looks like ROTJ suits but with grey mouths.Maybe they was going to be grey in ROTJ instead of black?I have another 'London' pic of that same shoot(I think).

Thanks Wackychimp :thumbsup

Lookink at the Hi-res pic John posted, it appears to me that the AB button's are painted in the ESB scheme, also, i think that the right arm doesn't have molded overlaps.

But it's late here so i might just go to bed.
