Things all released before the Disney acquisition by the same guy who created and will defend the prequels to his death. And during that time, there was plenty of OT and beyond material being released beside them (EU that is, but it still counts). And I drank it all up.
Ok, but Disney could have retconned the Clone Wars cartoon and didn't. It's still canon. Where's the problem?
Never said or implied that it was. "Distance from" and "crap on" are 2 completely different things.
Ok, so...what's the problem then? I mean, TFA is distant merely by virtue of its setting. An entire galactic civil war has happened, followed by the creation of a new government and (apparently) attempted reestablishment of the Jedi, followed by another large-scale conflict. There's your distance.
I don't believe there are. I daresay most if not all who liked the prequels also loved the OT, including myself.
I suppose the better description is "People who like the PT, and people who only like the OT." I didn't mean to imply you didn't like the OT.
Explained properly, it could make perfect sense. Besides, I've heard the TFA novelization says Snoke was born hundreds of years before then. (I will admit I haven't read it yet for myself, so that info could be wrong for all I know)
I mean, yeah, I suppose you could toss around some exposition to get the job done somehow. It just seems like a long walk for a short glass of water, ya know?
Except that that show has a direct connection to the OT, so I would argue that referencing one, references the other.
Yes, and it also directly references the PT. Asokha is on it. Rex is on it. It's not trying to distance itself from the PT or the Clone Wars cartoon (which isn't surprising, given the Filioni connection).
I guess I'm just...not really understanding what it is you want or what the problem is, exactly?
Did you want more references to the PT in the new movie? Why? I mean, aside from just saying "We love you, too, PT fans," what would it accomplish story-wise? I could've used more exposition on the state of galactic affairs, but at the same time, it's not super relevant to the immediate story.
Are you saying that you feel like the PT is being abandoned somehow? Because, I don't really see it. Chronologically speaking, the story has simply moved on. All the characters from the PT are dead by the timeframe of TFA. The technology has developed and evolved, too. The events of the PT have been resolved in the OT itself. TFA is a new story (with old story beats) featuring some of the old characters, but mostly new characters.
I don't see this as an abandonment or a distancing from the PT except insofar as there were explicit discussions of using real sets rather than digital ones, and trying to keep F/X as practical as possible. Actually, I'd say that TFA shares some tonal aspects with ROTS, so there's a PT connection there of sorts.
I dunno. Like I say, I just...don't get exactly where the problem is or what you want other than fan service. To be clear, I'm not fond of fan service derived from the OT, either, when it doesn't organically arise out of the story. Like, making Finn Lando's kid...that'd be really, really stupid and unnecessary. Or making Poe, like, Wedge's cousin just because he's an X-wing pilot or something. Or, for that matter, making Snoke a cloned body of the Emperor or whathaveyou would, to my way of thinking, be just as bad as making him Darth Plagueis.
