STAR WARS Rebels new animated series!

Yet so much was left unsaid in TFA you are forced to read the novels to even remotely understand what was going on

Very embarrassing for you Astro.....I took my 8 year old daughter & 17 year old son to one of the screenings,.....none of us needed any aid understanding...

...what was left unsaid?

I also enjoyed most of TFA but I agree they could have expanded on the relationship between FO/Republic/Resistance for the general audience (for example)

The relationship between resistance, the first order and the new republic wasn't established at all. Sure, films are allowed to leave you hanging, but TFA came off as sloppy. Why did poe abandon his mission? What happened to maz? How did maz get the lightsaber?

Not to mention the fact that so much was hidden in the mystery box. Stuff that didn't need to be. It came off like self important intrigue.

But,...thats Star Wars

When SW came out in 77, it was full of things you didn't understand....you had to hit the ground running....Empire was the same,....& a different mood....

I don't see the gaps that you mention as anything new in Star Wars,...gaps like that were always there,...maybe some will be answered in future episodes....maybe they won't....I don't feel the need to search for those answers

If the issues that you have were explained in the film it would have felt forced (no pun intended) like we were being spoon fed,....I prefer to connect some dots....it respects your intelligence

I just re-listened to the commentary track of A New Hope about 6 weeks ago and they discussed just that sort of thing.

Here is a description of that infomation discussed:

It’s well known that Star Wars was inspired by the films of Akira Kurosawa — in particular The Hidden Fortress, which tells the story from the point of view of the two least important characters. Lucas wanted to achieve the feeling he had when he first watched Kurosawa’s movie in that he didn’t understand the culture and history but followed the human element. That’s why he spends no time explaining how the universe actually works. This ultimately was the reason that so many people felt the movie was fast-paced upon release, because the audience was trying to catch up to what was happening in the background.

There's a huge difference between spoon fed closure and poor film making.

Take poe. It's true that we don't literally need to see him evade death. And we don't need to see the steps he took to get back to the resistence. That would be spoonfeeding.

But the hole created by sloppy film making is that we are left asking why he abandoned his mission. Why did he stop looking for BB8?

That's what I'm talking about.

As for star wars. Lucas was smart enough to put us in the middle of the conflict and have us connect the dots. But he was talented enough to lay out the path so that we could make the mental leaps.

But unless you go online or read a book, you simply aren't going to have a clue about the new republic. There's so much overly complicated setup for these three factions that it's more annoying than anything.

Once Poe awoke from the crash. It was his duty to contact the resistance and let them know the map was unsecured. Due to his condition, General Organa chose to pull Poe off Jakku and place a team of resistance personnel to spread out and take over the search for BB-8.

...I'd like to think that Ben didn't live all those 17 years on Tattooine,....just returning to check up on Luke's progress,.....& settled there permanently perhaps a year or two before the events of Ep 4...
Obi-Wan told Yoda, "I will take the child [Luke] and watch over him," so I think he'd make good on that by staying on Tattooine, but I can't imagine him doing nothing but spying on the Lars' homestead day after day for 17 years. He seemed to be pretty familiar with Mos Eisley, so he may have spent some time there getting himself into trouble.

the Poe bit didn't bother me,...when he showed up at the Resistance base,....I just joined the dots.....MJF has given an official backstory.....but I suppose I just reckoned it took him some time to find civilisation,.....perhaps finding someone to trust to make communication with the Resistance,....if he had arrived at the same watering hole that Fin had,....he'd heard that there had ben an incident there & 2 humans & a BB8 had escaped in a stolen freighter.....he was either picked up,....stole or bought his own ride back to the Resistance.....the mission to get the part of the map back & his droid was still a priority,...not abandoned,.....but first,....get off this rock & get back to base

The three factions.....a bit like the World,....Nazi Germany & the French Resistance......nothing too complicated

No I didn't. I just pulled that out my butt. Convincing though, right?

And that was the point.

First off. Star Wars is fantasy, not science fiction. As a writer, a director, a designer, a fan, etc.. you must approach the film that way.

If you are a true fan...

...of Star Wars or any other type of movie/TV/story and something happens that is not quite explained, you accept that there must be a way for it to have happened, you just don't know what it is. It's not import for us to know how a lightsaber works, or how emotions in droids are achieved, or why AT-ATs are great military vehicles. We simply accept that there must be a way or reasons for it.

If you are a cynical a-hole...
... then you go around nitpicking details and feel that if everything is not spelled out, then it is poor story telling.

So you decide. Which one do you want to be?

Poe's post crash stuff was scripted. It wasn't sloppy, it was a choice to leave it out to keep the story moving. It really wasn't that important.

Did anyone watch the SW after show? They were talking about the whole Lt. Commander thing and they and some fans seem to think the characters were doing that intentionally. They thought Ezra was being a jerk so they called him Lt. instead of Cmdr. I'm not sure if that was what they intended or just fan speculation though.

As for TFA, I think the only thing they did wrong was not telling you what happened with the govt. and why there's a resistance. Now I only saw it once, so if the crawl said any of that I don't remember. I didn't have any trouble following the movie. I'd like to point out though that a Prequel critique is that the story was too hard to follow (it wasn't), but if TFA is criticized everyone gets all up in arms.

With the support of the REPUBLIC, General Leia Organa leads a brave RESISTANCE. She is desperate to find her brother Luke and gain his help in restoring peace and justice to the galaxy.

That"s all we get.

I think all that is rubbish. Two reasons:

1. As I stated earlier, there is no canon evidence that LCDR is rank used in the Rebellion.
2. Right after getting the promotion, Ezra says to himself something like, "Lieutenant, huh." It was hearing that during my second viewing that put it all in perspective for me.
