Star Wars Rebels: Chopper

A few months ago I started building Chopper. Since he's a junk droid I wanted to scavenge as much as possible. The frame was made from scrap wood my neighbor gave me.

The scavenging went out the window when I built the legs. I decided to 3d print them.

A couple of the early prints had issues thanks to some cheap filament but I was able to salvage the parts.

From there I decided to print a few more parts. While I could have made one of the details out of pvc pipe, I wanted to hide a switch in it so I printed it.

I couldn't locate a saucer that matched the shape I wanted so I printed that as well.

I want to debut him at Pensacon and before I knew it time was running out. I've been pushing to get him complete. I've got less than two weeks left.

I still have to make battery boxes, paint the body, weather the body, and install all the electronics.

Four days before Pensacon I had a motor go bad. It was one of K-9's old motors that worked in Chopper but wouldn't work in K-9. I guess it just was dying. I had to have one shipped overnight.

He's not finished but he went to the convention anyway.

The whole family went and had a great time.

Since Pensacon I've managed to complete some weathering on Chopper.

We were also invited to attend a convention a couple of hours away. It was a lot of fun with room for the droids to roam...and by roam I mean chase small children.

Weird things happened later in the day though...

Kenny I don't remember seeing your weathering update on astromech. It looks great, really makes the finishing touch!!

Chopper has been missing his leg power coupling cable. I didn't want to put one on until I was sure I could make it strong enough to take the abuse he's subjected to by kids. I think I finally have it. I can carry the leg by the cable so it should hold long enough for me to notice it getting tugged on and yell at the kid.

Speaking of kids destroying things. They obliterated his radar eye at the last outing. Thankfully my friend gave me part of a bused projector and it's perfect for Chopper's eye. Plus it gives me the ability to do the holoprojector/flashlight trick from the series.
