Wow! I had never thought foam would look this clean. Great work! I'm hoping to building a 1:1 of this soon.

Hi Everybody,
I know its been a little while since I have posted some new pics, I just haven't had the time with all the projects I have on the go. So here are a couple of pics to keep you going. I have done most of the sealing on the parts, wired up the droid and started to do some of the base coats. These will be clear coated before adding the weathering and matching it up with the Chopper stills which have been published.
I have also shown some links to items I have used if anybody is thinking of doing something similar and give them some ideas on a budget.


This is the led board which has been added so I can change the light set up.

If you do start this project or do another droid there are a couple of pointers I was given by people doing space marine costumes using foam. If you get any gaps that you need to fill or any bits you want to smooth out, use caulk decorators filler. It works really well and still has a little flex when dry, plus it takes paint well.
I can remember if I mentioned it before but if you want to put any in fine details, just score the foam and gently heat it with a heat gun to get the foam to separate and give you some good detail.

I will say after seeing the video clips I think my build is to big, if I would have waited until there was more reference out there it would have been made a little smaller. On saying that I'm still very happy with the way its turning out and it was a gamble starting this project so early.

I will be posting some more pictures later today of the painted droid. Its almost ready for the best part, the weathering.

I have done some more painting and weathering along with finishing the second foot. I have also started to add some of the side detailing on the legs. This has been difficult due to the lack of side images but I have been using my imagination to fill in the gaps.


I wasn't happy with the original arm that comes out of the front so I am re-doing this.

still haven't started mine.
i calculated the body width at 20" so quite close to your dimensions. If you are thinking its a little big i may bring it down to 18"w. my artoo has a body width of about 18.5" so that should be ok.

I think the 18.5 would be a better size to go for. I'm just not happy with the height of mine. The scales are good, it just needed everything to be reduced a bit.

Loving the work, just thought there's probably only three(?) full scale chops on the planet right now, that's amazing when you think about it. i wonder how many there will be in a year.

This is really looking great, I saw your video on Jedi News as well. It's nice to see some more Rebels builds before the premiere. I think I'll have to make some Chopper pep files or something when I have the time. The design is starting to grow on me.

I haven't made any progress in the last week, I have been having a break. I will be cracking on in the next two weeks to get it finished for MCM Expo comic con later in the month.

awesome build.... I am making a "little" r2d2.. part foam, part wood, part ikea stuff.. May I ask you about your electronics??? The remote control is for the ligths, the sound, all, or none?? I am very noob in electronics, but I will love to put some sounds and lights on mine..

Awesome work, man! I might have to take a stab at this some day!

If you mark out your lines and score them with a blade, you can heat it with a heat gun and it will separate your lines and add better detail.

Well that's a neat trick. I'm going to have to remember that...
