Re: Star Wars Ep VII Force Awakens Captain Phasma helmet (CHROME TESTS ON P8!
My Mirror Chrome should be arriving in the post today - do you prime first, or straight on with the gloss?
I reckon it's prime, but thought I'd ask the expert
For my test helmets I started by sanding the whole thing with 220-grit to give the primer a bit more to grab onto. Then I gave everything a coat of black primer. Once that was dry, the whole helmet got a clearcoat.
The next day I went over it with the Mirror Chrome. Bear in mind that it doesn't spray on like regular paint. You'll want to barely dust the chrome onto the surface and let it flash off before continuing with additional coats. It only takes a few seconds for the solvents to dissipate and the chrome look will appear almost instantly. Repeat as needed to make it as bright as you like.
Be careful to avoid handling the fresh chrome with your bare hands. Clean gloves are okay, you just need to be careful about any oily contamination.
Once the chrome has dried thoroughly, use a microfiber cloth to wipe off any excess metallic dust that isn't completely adhered to the surface. Be gentle.
Give it a day to finish off-gassing completely, then apply a final clearcoat. For that final clearcoat, you'll need to find a product with the lowest possible solvent content and spray it on with an airbrush or HVLP gun. Anything from a rattlecan will eat the chrome finish and make it look like normal, dull, silver paint. On occasions where I've had the clearcoat mess up the chrome, I've had some luck with spraying another very light coat of mirrorchrome onto the tacky surface of the fresh clearcoat.
Once the clearcoat has cured completely, mask off and paint the black parts, then attache the noseplate and add any weathering you want.
I hope this helps. I'll be writing it up in better detail in the build thread once I finish painting up a helmet that I'm satisfied with.
If anybody else wants in on this run, please post here and I'll PM you with payment info.
