Star Trek XI- The Boots!

Chock is up to lack of experience in working with leather. I put on two coats... the first coat was great.... but just not quite dark enough. Second coat DEFINITELY got it as dark as I wanted but now I am having to scrub and scrub to try to get them to stop bleeding on everything they touch... :( Same sye worked great for my sandtrooper pouches, but then, I put sealer on them.

Isn't there a sealer that will make a matte finish instead of gloss? I am considering doing this with the boots I ordered but don't want to ruin them.

Apparently some of us learn by having black dye all over our hands, pants... floor... and everything we touch...

In the past I've bought bown footwear that I've found that needed to be black for costuming. Rubbing an acetone soaked rag will remove the finish off of the shoe or boot, wax and sometimes the color, for restaining. Going from a light shade to dark is always best. I had practiced on shoes bought from thrift stores to get the hang of it. Another option is to take the boots to a shoe repair shop and have a pro recolor them. Just thought this bit of info may be useful.

I'm wondering why I bothered to post a response in the first place..

I've used Fiebings shoe dye on boots before, you just have to seal it properly. The stuff we use in the shop for all our belts works great, it's called Eco-flow satin shene. You can get it at Tandy leather stores. As long as you didn't soak the dye all the way through the boots to the inside, putting a couple coats of this stuff on the dyed boots will permanently lock in all the color. If you want it to be shinier you can use super shene.

There were three boots that I am aware of, the DKNY "hero" boots for guys, the DKNY "hero" boots for the girls in dresses, and the background boots which are the Pumas.

I need to amend this statement.

To my knowledge there were a total of 5 different styles of boots;

1) The hero tall boot - DKNY
2) The heroine tall boot - DKNY
3) The background midheight boot - DKNY
4) The background tall boot - Nature Breeze
5) The background shoe - Puma

If you are talking about the hero tall boots the only changes are the dying and the addition of a thin leather flap with a little velcro closure at the top to cover the zipper. As apollo said, the original strap and buckle are untouched.

Oni thanks for the link, lot of neat looking stuff on that site.

No problem. I just happened to notice the shoe when the guy landed in front of Kirk. I remembered the design and found it again later.

I'll be more exact. It looks like it's an open hook without zipper. I can't really tell what the exact color is, but black seems to be the main color. Perhaps it's antique black. :ninja

NECRO THREAD! :love

Is there a pic out there somewhere where it shows the flap that covers the zipper on the SA boots?

For the ladies in duty dresses, the DKNY Dia boot is the closest choice with the DKNY Alacantar as a close runner up. The original boot is the DKNY Hyper 2 and can't be found online so far...but keep your eyes peeled. Never know when something might pop up!

The Dia boot can be found on amazon right now for $119 ish. :) I wear them with my 09 Trek Uhura and they are super comfy for cons! Hope this helps.

Fiebings Professional Oil Dye is more colorfast. If you get it on your hands you're gonna wear it for a few days.
Tandy Leather has it.

And clean the leather of the factory glaze and any polish.

The boots the Romulans wear are Spiral Tabi from Ayya. :cool

This is my pair of Ayya tabi :cool

I found a boot that could be used as a substitute, the DKNY speed bootie. The sole appears identical to the rebel, except that the circles are red instead of beige. They're ankle boots, with a partial flap covering most of the side zipper using velcro. As far as low rise footwear goes, they're closer in style to the hero than the puma 500. They look like a cross between the TNG boot and the Rebel.

Feeling pretty frustrated that I can't even find a "close enough" knock off for the womens boots. I've been looking for over a month and I really need to come up with something to wear in early July to London Comic Con. Does anyone have any current info on decent alternative boots?
