Star Trek XI ALL THREE Badge-insignia Pototype prop Update Post #58

Re: Star Trek XI Spock's Badge-insignia Pototype prop

Awesome, thank you! I was begining to wonder if anyone had gotten the symbol off of the site. Again, thanks! Here's all three of the new insignias togeather!

So I'm new to Star Trek, what are the three insignias designations?

Re: Star Trek XI Spock's Badge-insignia Pototype prop

From left to right, science, command, and engineering/Operations

Im pretty sure its the lighting that gives it that yellow look. See how the degree of 'yellowness' changes between those three shots? I would think the props would be more consistent. Plus all the fingerprints makes me think straight aluminum

Okay...update.

The prototype began looking too big at 3". A comm-badge at 2" was way too small for the detail. So I scaled a picture of Uhura with a straight on shot and came up with 2.5". BIG difference in the overall diameter of the thing. So I did prototype 2.0 in Uhura's badge. Boy what a pain in the butt to cut the division marker out. Keep in mind I'm an old fashioned prop maker, razor knife and sand paper. :lol
Here she is with a flash coat of primer.

Here she is next to her big cousin...

And here she is next to the....Da' da' da' da' da' da' da' DA!

The command badge!

The command badge will be done tomorrow....pics WILL be posted!

A new science/medical badge will be following shortly there after.

Now, who can suggest some help with casting?

Re: Star Trek XI Spock's Badge-insignia Pototype prop (Update post #45)

Have you decided metal or rubber yet?

Don't know how to cast in either one! :lol

So since I have to learn, I'm thinking about "white metal?" or "pot metal?" something with a low melting point.

Anyone have any suggestions or tips?

Re: Star Trek XI Spock's Badge-insignia Pototype prop (Update post #45)

Yeah...cast it in rubber!!! :lol

I'm not going to win this one am I?

Re: Star Trek XI Spock's Badge-insignia Pototype prop (Update post #45)

Since we've had reports these are not rubber, I see no reason to do them as such.

As for casting them in metal, unless you have access to a furnace, any kind of metai will be difficult.

However.

It just so happens that I recently made contact with a guy here in Sturgis that make his own belt buckles and pins for the big motorcycle rally.

I am planning on doing these in laser cut patterns then cast in metal.

How about pressure cast in crystal clear carbon fiber impregnating resin packed with alumunum powder? Then buff the heck outta them. Should look just like aluminum.

Hey micdavis I am doing Illustrator versions of them, if you want them let me know. I am making two versions of them. One with the new inside logo and ones with TOS Versions of the inside logo.

:D

Re: Star Trek XI Spock's Badge-insignia Pototype prop (Update post #45)

basically just clear resin with tons aluminum powder in it. Just wanna suggest something easier than melting metal and all that

Re: Star Trek XI Spock's Badge-insignia Pototype prop (Update post #45)

I don't understand a word you just said..... :lol

:lol:lol:lol

Bro, you and I are so old school! This is why I don't actually MAKE anything. Sure, I'll build it, I'll design it and on occasion, I'll even WEAR it. But making copies of stuff, not for me.

Now that makes sense! :lol

I'll check into it.

Re: Star Trek XI Spock's Badge-insignia Pototype prop (Update post #45)

Exactly, Trip- urethane with lots of aluminum powder.
Make a silicone gang mold in stages and pour away. They're thin enough that you could heat-gun a curve into them if you want. Besides, as with the combadges, metal would be way too heavy. And no detail painting, either!
I'll have another option tomorrow- calling a friend.
BTW- Happy Thanksgiving, all!

Now that makes sense! :lol

I'll check into it.

Be sure to specify that you want the super bright aluminum powder too- the regular tends to look kind of dull.
