Star Trek Tholian Web Space Suit

I made a full replica of the space suit seen in the TOS episode "The Tholian Web" a few weeks ago for a Star Trek art show here in Los Angeles. But it was kind of a rush job that I completed in 2 weeks. So I decided to go back and make a much more accurate version of the suit, starting with the crazy psychedelic helmets that they wore. The structures are basically carved foam covered in metallic and stretch lame. I decided to make the cables magnetic so they can be plugged into the fittings on the front of the suit. That way, I can sew the cables directly to the suit and still be able to detach the helmet to get in and out of it. The nameplate is made in the same way the originals were made (they're back engraved yellow lucite over the same fuchsia lame used on the fittings in front). Unfortunately, modern engraving is done with a laser and the old ones were engraved with a router. The result is much more opaque lettering and a limited selection of preprogrammed fonts. I matched it as best I could.

Awesome replica. It's one of the most godawful ugly space helmets in the history of entertainment but you did a great job. :D

Re: Star Trek Tholian Web Space Helmet

Great job. You dont see alot of those helmets replicated.

Re: Star Trek Tholian Web Space Helmet

Man you really knocked that one out of the ballpark!!

AWESOME JOB!!

Re: Star Trek Tholian Web Space Helmet

Thanks! Yeah, it's one of the most bizarre-looking costumes ever, but the design has grown on me over time. The colored pieces on the front look like they were inspired by the anodized aluminum fittings on Apollo space suits.

I did make a small change to the design. There are various little greeblies on the front of the suit, most of which are notions from the fabric store which I scratch built because the original pieces are extremely difficult to find today. But there is one piece on the original suit that I believe was some sort of tiny watch face which I've analyzed in screen caps. Since I can't get a very clear view to duplicate it, I decided to make it a little more "Star Trek" looking by putting a tiny moire inside instead of the watch face.

Very cool replica, well done! So, where's the suit?

Hahaha, that's great! They always looked like beekeepers to me...

Re: Star Trek Tholian Web Space Helmet

Just wanted to mention that I completed this entire costume and wore it at Star Trek Las Vegas this past weekend. I was even selected to participate in the costume contest:

And I took this:
