Star Trek Into Darkness (Pre-release)

But Michael - let's not forget JJ Trek did not do as well as Paramount thought it would. The success of the film rests on the marketing - no Trek film, not even the motion picture got as much attention as mac store Trek. Shoot, Gene's death didn't get as much ink.

True, but in the same vein I know plenty of people who aren't Trek fans that went to this film and liked it.

Personally I didn't particularly care for it but you can't deny it had a broader appeal than previous films.

JJ Trek appealed to the masses who just want to eat popcorn and turn their minds off, it's more emotional than cerebral. Nothing wrong with that. There is lots of action, lots of flesh, eye candy effects and the same thin plot and poor writing that only Orci and Kurtzman can provide. (I promise not to tangent into how much I really don't like those two 'writers'.) But this is why JJ will probably make decent Star Wars movies. Star Wars doesn't care what a hyperdrive looks like or how it works, it's not about the science of the universe, it's fantasy, it is emotional, action packed and about the characters.

Star Trek is Science Fiction, it took it's science as seriously as it's characters. They weren't just plot devices or cool effects. A lot of it was based on real science. When JJ tossed that aspect out the window and turned Trek into fantasy he alienated a large portion of long time Trekkies. People who like good action but also like all that geeky, science-y stuff, too.

So yes, the movie had broader appeal and made some monies. It's a fun ride, it's exciting and people liked it. But it's not Star Trek.

When, exactly?

All of the science fiction content of Star Trek is based, to some measure, on real science. (Some episodes more than others.) Do you feel like Trek ever had a significant strand of time when it "took it's science as seriously as it's characters."

For my money, in the best of Trek, they've always fueled each other. The thematic ramifications of the science fiction as the impetus for the character drama. Even those instances were spread out; not exclusive to one span of time.

When I say Trek took it's science as seriously as it's characters I mean to say that they took the time to think about how things worked, the physics, engineering and such where applicable. They put thought into the engineering of the ship, how the Bussard collectors worked, the warp drive, etc. That's all.

In Star Wars it doesn't matter if they explain how the hyperdrive works or why the interior of the Millennium Falcon doesn't fit the exterior. Again, nothing wrong with that, I love Star Wars, too.

Interesting; it seems your objection is not to the thing itself (Star Trek) but the additional materials surrounding it that we've come to expect. (Technical information on the ship, etc.)

On this, I can totally sympathize with you.

As a fan of the new film, I hunger for that level of information. On one level it's freeing -- I get to dream about it. On another level, you bet I'll be roaming those halls with awe come April 23rd when the video game is released.

Sokath, his eyes uncovered!

There are things I like about JJ Trek, too, I don't hate the film. I just miss my techie stuff.

I think at one point an Enterprise manual was announced, but the Trek09 E was omitted at the last minute before publishing.

On a related "universe fleshing out" note, I've really been enjoying the ongoing Trek comic that has reinterpreting TOS episodes/concepts in the new movie universe. Seeing the Tribble homeworld was both fascination and appropriately funny.

Too bad they dropped the 09 E. Maybe they'll release a tech manual on it this time 'round.

Thanks for the heads up on the comics, I'll have to check them out. The idea of seeing the Tribble home world has piqued my curiosity.

Maybe it *IS* a consistent size and it's everything else that keeps changing. You ever think of that? Huh? HUH? ;)

Would that include the crew as well? If Kirk and crew kept changing from three feet to nine feet and everywhere in between, while the ship stayed consistent, it would be pretty hard to run it.

How did this drift to page 3?! Movie is only a month and change away. New image of JJ on the bridge...but not THE bridge. :)
