Star Trek Into Darkness (Post-release)

As someone who loved the film, this release disgusts me.
Cancelled my pre-order for the phaser combo. Really wanted the QMX replica, but between not really wanting to support a stereoscopic conversion, being insulted by lack of features, and NO option for the original shifting aspect ratios -- I can't justify it for the phaser anymore.

Welcome to the future of content delivery. Paramount is doing what Netflix did a few years ago. Make physical content delivery less attractive then digital. People at the time reacted with the same anger at Netflix and the companies stock dropped to $50. I realized they were correct, digital delivery is the future and bought the stock for myself and clients. $230/share later their strategy and instinct was correct.

Yup. This is just the beginning. It makes sense. They retain a LOT more control, they can go to a license-based approach rather than an ownership-based approach, and it'll (for a while, anyway) cut down on piracy some.

Naw. There will always be a market for tangible mediums. I mean, when movies started showing up on cable television, did people quit buying home videos? Streaming movies feels more like the next cable than the next generation of end all, be all distribution format.

And it is FAR less expensive.

If physical media was a stock I would be shorting the crap out if it. 10 years from now DVD sales will be a fraction if where it is now, if not sooner. Developing nations are quickly adopting mobile platforms and skipping the home entertainment concept. We are talking Billions if people.

It can be but it all depends because that's not necessarily the case for games & e-books both of which in digital download form can cost you as much (or even more) as the physical versions. So while the studios/publishers might be saving money that doesn't mean that they'll actually pass on the savings to the consumer.

That, too. I've been saying for ages that this is a better model, though, particularly because you can offer people EXACTLY what they want, and then, using data mining, give them even more of the same. I think Netflix was on to something, it just jumped the gun by a couple years and did its rollout in a hamfisted way. It's been a while, but I think a big part of the problem was the brand/product split. THAT was the stupid part, in my opinion -- keeping the Netflix brand for the digital only, and splitting out Qwikster for the disc service. If they'd done...well...exactly what they ended up doing, people wouldn't care.

I have a number of friends who don't have cable TV anymore, and watch all their stuff online. They all have a Netflix digital account, though. And ultimately, I'd bet that Paramount, Universal, etc. will either have their own services, or will continue to partner with iTunes, Netflix, Amazon Prime, etc. and get their content directly to people that way.

It's all about economies of scale. E-books are still not having the same kind of market penetration yet .

So your words of wisdom are basically screw personal preference and conform to what the studios think is best for you? I'm not saying streaming isn't a viable option, but that's what I call it. An option. Some movie collectors like the tangible mediums. Did you know there's an official Star Trek phone app that displays a replica of the phaser that you can rotate and switch between stun and kill just like in the movie? It's got the sound effects, a mini-game, trailers ect. Why not settle for that instead of the super expensive and space consuming replica?

The studios have to offer up extras like that or the hot wheels vengeance ship so that people will still buy the physical media over the streams. Having a dvd collection is going to go the way of the dodo within ten years just like vhs, the only physical media you will probably get will be a flash card with the content preloaded.

Dude.

He's a FINANCIAL advisor. He's advising people what to buy stock in if they want to make money. It's not a moral decision. It's "What are the steps I need to take to make bank?"

He's also saying that the writing is on the wall. Streaming is popular enough with BOTH consumers AND studios that it will become the dominant method in the next 10 years, if not sooner. Disc-based media is on its way out, and it's not a surprise.

You wanna complain about it or hold out on using new technology? Knock yourself out. Buy whatever you like. But recognize that, over time, your options for disc-based media will go away and there's nothing you can do about it.

So your words of wisdom

No, my informed, investment professional opinion. I made no comment whatsoever how I "feel" about it. That is an entirely separate consideration. How I feel? Ambivalent. I don't collect media, physical or digital.

Try telling all that to MS. Didn't get them that far. I like my special edition thx.

Also I worry about special features in the world of streaming. Hell. They're even being phased out now im sure. After purchasing Transformers 3 on bluray. Which had NO special features. Had to buy the 3d version. Iron man 3 has like 1 hour 30 of extras. This doesnt look loads better.....

Sure there is. My buddies and I will continue to buy disc-based media like we always have. It's been working fine so far.
