I'm working on the Starfleet dress uniform from Star Trek Into Darkness and ran into the problem of finding rank pips for the epaulet as well as the insignia. The insignia has a slightly wider ring around it than the Star Trek The Motion Picture version upon which it is based. So, long story short I modeled them in 3D and had them printed at shapeways. The quality of the print is fantastic and they were very inexpensive. Anyway, I gave them several coats of paint and some gloss coat and then affixed pin backs to them. I think they turned out great.
