Star Trek Containers

Hi guys,

As all trek lovers know, there are plenty of containers, carry cases, boxes etc adorned in various ways that contain the props we love so much.

Does anyone have pics of these that they may have made or know of where to buy some of them so we can make our own?

Thanks,
Andy

Also if anyone has made them, how have they made the foam inserts with which to place the props in?

Re: The Foam:

One way is to place your item on the foam, draw an outline, cut all the way through the foam, then put another layer of foam beneath the cutout layer for the bottom. You can also add back bits here and there if some parts need additional support. Sometimes you might want to use two cut out layers if your piece is thick and has a lot of details. For example, let's say you have a gun that has a large handle, but the barrel is thin. If you cut out the whole shape, the barrel might not be supported. For that you might want to use more than one layer of cut foam, or add back pieces to certain areas for support.

Another way is to use Pick 'n Pluck foam. It's basically like a lot of little squares of foam packed tightly into one piece. With this kind of foam, you "pick and pluck" out the squares you want to remove to create the shape you'd like. -And again, you'd use another layer of foam underneath to pad the bottom.

This could be a fun thread! Some of the bigger containers are pretty cool on their own, plus they can also be useful for actually storing stuff. :) I'm still on the lookout for some of those old "space capsule" toyboxes they had all through "Trek 2" :thumbsup

I know, that the yellow cylindrical containers blown out from the shuttlebay from the TNG episode 5x05 "Disaster", and seen in "Generations" are actually chemical containers from Rikutec. They're certain expensive for just a prop.

Oh man there's a million of these things. Just off the top of my files...

"Enterprise" used a lot of metal cylinders as cases... some of them are cigar humidors.

I have 3 cases like the types actually used on the show.. One is tape case (available at K-Mart around that time) which was used in earlier eps of ST:TNG as a case, then later used as a control panel in some episodes. Another is an auto toolbox (K-Mart again) which was shaped to accomodate a quart of motor oil on one side. Finally I have a CD case (K-Mart yet again) that has a parallelogram profile, and was used by Picard as a "briefcase" in at least one ep. I'll try to post some pics soon.

I've found with some foam you can use a hot wire cutter to cut precision spaces for props.

So basically drive to K-Mart, buy any case, spray it silver, attach a commbadge to it, and voila. :lol

The cylinders seem to be spice containers from Bed, bath , and beyond or similar stores. One set with the metal rack I think is magnetic spice containers. At least 1 of the larger black cases with the integrated handle I think was from the turbographics game system from back in the '80's. I may be able to get a screen shot of the turbographics case for comparison.

HEY!!! That's a photo of MY contatiner posted earlier in the thread, lol. I picked it up from IAW and have since bought a few more identical to the ones used on the show "Enterprise." They are "Hardigg" military cases and you can get them on ebay for pretty cheap (they are expensive if you buy them from Hardigg about twice what I paid for the case and the props, lol). All you have to do is stick a few decals on and it's identical to the ones used in the show.

Make some of the graphics from the show (like these below)that you can stick right on and there you go, instant Enterprise case!!!

There is a military case used by Data in theep where he loses his memory and is called "Jaden" "Thine Own Self."

TNG also used several tape cassette storage boxes and camcorder cases.

Many were surplus item then (mid 80s to 90s) and nearly impossible to find now.

I got one of those too. Will have it finished soon and post some pics as well...:)
