Wish I could have gone to the marathon at my local Imax today. I will probably catch this movie next week, have too much going on the next few days.

Currently at 93% on RT,. Oh, 94% for the TOP CRITICS because people like to use that as a measure instead.

Not as bad as I feared. Karl Urban still owns the soul of DeForest Kelley. (The crew cast are pretty good overall.) I was surprised to see a few more slower-paced scenes in there that felt a little more old-school Trek but as per usual, the hysterically over-the-top action sequences and crazy pacing every single time an enemy was onscreen killed any potential for suspense or actually being afraid of Idris Elba's character (who actually had a fairly interesting twist that is a wasted opportunity). Kirk, still written as a wise-cracking and occasionally immature goofball still comes off SO wrong even though Pine does a great job in more sombre moments. One of the biggest sins: Starfleet ships don't feel like huge starships any longer but move like the Millennium Falcon. Things like space stations just a couple hundred years into the future are still impossibly huge and over-designed.

Better than 1 and 2, but still Star Trek for those that don't really like Star Trek. And it still feels like "beautiful people cosplaying".

The irony is that if it wasn't supposed to be Trek, I would have thought much more highly of it. If you ignore the parts that "fail" at being Star Trek it's actually a well put together action adventure.

Question:

Do they really kill the swarm ships with Beastie Boys music?

Yes. They DO kinda give a good reason for it but the whole thing fits in with the "for people that don't like Star Trek" thing. They also do a couple jokes about it being "classical music" and I swear I saw at least a couple crew members tapping to it. My main gripe with the scene is that is was made for people to "dig along" and go "YEAAAH!" inside. Again, if it weren't Trek, it would be glorious fun, but you're just sitting there thinking "These characters shouldn't be acting this way..."

This is pretty much what I've thought of the whole reboot universe. They are space adventure movies more than Star Trek movies. I read someone compare them to Galaxy Quest. I'll wait for this to be on TV like the last two movies.

Just got back from seeing it with my son. My 11yr old absolutely loved it. Surprisingly I found that I enjoyed this one much more than the last two. This film is light years better than Darkness. Kind of sitcomy though, but still...the good parts overwhelmingly outnumber the bad.

If you even moderately enjoyed the first, you'll have a good time with this one. I never thought I would say this after seeing the original trailers and considering the bad taste that was left with me after the last one...but I will see this one again, and will buy it when it comes out on disc.

Atta Boy! Prolly gonna see it with some friends from out of town on Sat or Sun. It definitely has lots of positive buz, killing it with critics and good trailers.

Been too long since a good SciFi popcorn summer movie came along.

A perfectly fun movie that pretty much misses all the things I like about Star Trek.
This next tv show better be good.

I agree with whats already been said.

I just REALLY hate the fact that the new 1701-A is the same hot rod looking Enterprise. A great missed opportunity to use a hybrid of whats already been established and throw in a bit of new (or classic)

Red Alet, RED ALERT!!!!!! Do not engage critical faculties!!!! I repeat, DO NOT engage critical faculties!!!!!!
If you are looking for a Star Trek movie with a strong new story with depth ,a thoughtful and clever script and one that's kind of like the Star Trek films beloved by the old Star trek fans this is NOT the film you are looking for.

Its also everything I pray we NEVER get in a Star Wars film either!!!!

BUT if you are looking for non- stop thrills, some laughs, firey explosions, brilliant but absolutely bonkers visual effects , killer space bees, spectacular (but stupid ) stunts and set pieces, uttterly ludicrous plotholes, truly amazing coincidences, and just about everything you would have expected with the action knob dialled up passed eleven and then broken by the director Justin Lin then this is the film for you.

In other words, a great film for teenages and people with attention disorders but not real fans of ST ,though it is a lot closer to the old series in the way it handles crew scenes than the last two.

Do not read beyond this if you want to avoid spoilers.

I actual enjoyed it by trying (very hard) NOT to think about it at all. It is very entertaining, super fast and there are some very poignant moments in it regarding the past and present cast. I did like the pale french alien Rey , hated the motorbike scene, think Karl Urban is actually channeling DeForest Kelly, and wondered why the hell a star base that looks that fantastic with millions of people is so far out on the edge of space, next to an unexplored nebula (with no other starships apparently around) .
The visual effects are what saved the movie for me, even if they were proper panto OTT sci fi designs, kudos to the VFX teams the art and visual direction were spectacular , though I do draw the line at the space surfing to the Beastie Boys, which would not be my preffered method of defeating alien armadas .
I didn't feel disappointed by it, there have been a lot worse ST films and TV episodes ,but I don't think it rates the 90 odd percentage its got on RT. Its a typical summer blockbuster popcorn movie, but still not the kind I'd have preferred for a ST film.

PS
I could not figure out why that space station was so massive, particularly with that docking tube entrance that the Enterprise flies into that leads to a tunnel to the spaceport that literally went on for miles until it reached the centre which seemed rather odd. And then I remembered "Fast and Furious 6". Basically Justin Lin demanded it be like that so they could shoot the same kind of ending.

You know, I'm kind of siding with the a lot of what the nay Sayers are talking about with Nutrek. Isn't it suppose to give us something new ?.
They had the perfect set up from the first movie for every one to earn a respectable place in this universe. The elephant on the room, in my opinion
is the fact that Nero ( a Romulan) attacked a prison planet (Klingon) and destroyed 47 ?, warbirds. My understanding from my point of view as a Trek fan,
is there is no way the Klingons would let that go and would act IMMEDIATLY. With the Federation and Starfleet in the middle between the Romulans and Klingons
Kirk and crew would earn those seats, especially frat boy Kirk. A trial by fire so to speak. (kind of original, right ?.)Do these guys who write these movies understand
the universe they are in. (Don't touch McCoy. Karl Urban's portrayal is near perfection)

Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the first one for what it was and was basically the setup. The second one not so much. The story was done way better previously. Going there at that time was a big mistake due to the lack of emotional investment the audience had with these iterations. So what do we get for the third one, sounds like more of the same.
No I haven't seen the film, I probably will at some point in the next while. From what I've been reading its a good "action" movie so will be a nice get away from the everyday making the studio a boat load of money. Is that the only point to these movies ?. Make money, don't bother growing the franchise ?. Are you creating a legacy that will be fondly remembered or just throw away movies ?. I personally would just love to get a movie with more of what I know these are characters and are all about. Otherwise what's the point.
Hope I didn't get too off topic.

P.S. Good God Scotty. Would you please heat up the inter mix plasma, to boost the warp yield and give us some red bloody nacelle ends. What's wrong with you !

I took my teenage son and we both liked it. Silly fun that made me think of The Onion article on the first remake; "If i wanted to see young attractive people doing exciting things, I would watch sports..." http://www.theonion.com/video/trekkies-bash-new-star-trek-film-as-fun-watchable-14333

The spoiler referenced by Smilingotter was just awesome. I was going to guess something else, but when "------------" came on, I did a fist pump and thought "of course...." It is like the whole movie was a contrived plot just to make that one scene happen.

Desperately trying to avoid this, but I may have to go the girlfriend wants to go see it. :unsure

Well, maybe it can help make more people support NASA.. I have to accept some benefits of Silly Trek might be there.
