Red Alet, RED ALERT!!!!!! Do not engage critical faculties!!!! I repeat, DO NOT engage critical faculties!!!!!!
If you are looking for a Star Trek movie with a strong new story with depth ,a thoughtful and clever script and one that's kind of like the Star Trek films beloved by the old Star trek fans this is NOT the film you are looking for.
Its also everything I pray we NEVER get in a Star Wars film either!!!!
BUT if you are looking for non- stop thrills, some laughs, firey explosions, brilliant but absolutely bonkers visual effects , killer space bees, spectacular (but stupid ) stunts and set pieces, uttterly ludicrous plotholes, truly amazing coincidences, and just about everything you would have expected with the action knob dialled up passed eleven and then broken by the director Justin Lin then this is the film for you.
In other words, a great film for teenages and people with attention disorders but not real fans of ST ,though it is a lot closer to the old series in the way it handles crew scenes than the last two.
Do not read beyond this if you want to avoid spoilers.
I actual enjoyed it by trying (very hard) NOT to think about it at all. It is very entertaining, super fast and there are some very poignant moments in it regarding the past and present cast. I did like the pale french alien Rey , hated the motorbike scene, think Karl Urban is actually channeling DeForest Kelly, and wondered why the hell a star base that looks that fantastic with millions of people is so far out on the edge of space, next to an unexplored nebula (with no other starships apparently around) .
The visual effects are what saved the movie for me, even if they were proper panto OTT sci fi designs, kudos to the VFX teams the art and visual direction were spectacular , though I do draw the line at the space surfing to the Beastie Boys, which would not be my preffered method of defeating alien armadas .
I didn't feel disappointed by it, there have been a lot worse ST films and TV episodes ,but I don't think it rates the 90 odd percentage its got on RT. Its a typical summer blockbuster popcorn movie, but still not the kind I'd have preferred for a ST film.
PS
I could not figure out why that space station was so massive, particularly with that docking tube entrance that the Enterprise flies into that leads to a tunnel to the spaceport that literally went on for miles until it reached the centre which seemed rather odd. And then I remembered "Fast and Furious 6". Basically Justin Lin demanded it be like that so they could shoot the same kind of ending.
