Limited Run Star Lord Vol 2 METAL COMMUNICATOR & Pendants

Re: Star Lord Vol 2 Pendants in METAL

Just wanted to reaffirm that I am currently back to working on the lapel communicator. When you really start studying it, you can see there are a lot of compound surfaces (curves, extrudes, grooves/panel lines,) and since I like to get things right, it's pretty slow going.

Re: Star Lord Vol 2 Pendants in METAL

Update time on the COMMUNICATOR for those who are still following this. I've been making a fair bit of progress BUT have run into a couple snags.

The detail required for the very fine panel lines that cover the entire piece is extremely hard to duplicate, especially in metal (which, I suspect, is why it hasn't been done yet in the high resolution I'm aiming for) and keep it "budget friendly". To make it truly accurate, I may have to make this a multi-part piece that is printed and wax-cast in brass+silver (or brass with rhodium plating). This is the only metal-printing method that will preserve the details as crisp as I want them. Unfortunately, the cost is prohibitive... I don't know if I can bring this in at a reasonable cost using only high-grade parts, because printing in sterling silver is expensive. I AM working on ways trying to get around it... part of the body is painted red, so maybe that piece can be done in high-grade acrylic, saving a big chunk of the cost. This would depend on if I can make the very thin silver "frame" that surrounds the prop thick enough to print at all.

I'm also looking at simplifying it a little to see if it will print in the regular polished steel materials, which might get it to under $100, but the issue with that is that the surface is not perfectly smooth (as can be seen on the necklaces) and the communicator is a perfectly polished and smooth piece of tech.

My main concern is that I don't want to cheapen the final piece after putting so many hours into it. I'd rather have 10 really nice copies out there than 50 where details were skimped on.

More info as soon as I have it. (I'm going to hold off on showing the model until it's almost done.)

OK, I know I said I wasn't going to show anything until it was "almost done" and this is pretty far from it... but just to prove that I'm not foolin' y'all..

As I said... there is still a ton of detail to add and tweak but I've solved a couple issues that I wasn't happy with. I'm a little more optimistic now about the final cost... it still isn't going to be cheap if you want the full-quality piece, but I'm looking at the options. Current plan is red parts would be plastic, yellow would be brass and white would be silver, but that may still change.

Re: Star Lord Vol 2 Pendants in METAL

First printed prototype. I've made a few minor changes since, but this is pretty much 90% done. Currently having one made in metal. Once I confirm the parts are OK I will open up ordering, which should happen around New Year. It ended up being a 100% metal kit in 3 parts.

Final cost will be around $150 (which is less than I was anticipating for a while there), with a POSSIBLE "rough" option at about $100. (The cheaper one would use the same grainy metal as the necklace pendants. The downside is that the communicator is supposed to be polished chrome, with a smooth surface, so the cheaper option will not be as nice or accurate.)

Just got the first metal copy! Haven't had time to properly assemble or paint it yet which is why the brass isn't fully inserted into the slots but the manufacture was successful, so I'll be opening up ordering shortly.
