Star-Lord Annihilation Helmet: Finished Page 2

I was commissioned to build a Star-Lord helmet, from the Annihilation comic. I first started wading through all of the comics, and trying to nail down a concept since the helmet has so many versions to it. The customer decided he wanted the protruding center, instead of the sunken in version. I sculpted this in WED clay. I'm to the point where I will be making a junk mold with alginate. I plan on pulling two copies, one for cleaning up and getting nice and smooth, and another one to start sculpting the top part of. All of the zig zag lines on the face will light up, as well as the eyes and the vents on the sides. I'm getting excited to see this thing finished.

Re: Star-Lord Helmet Comic Book Style

So here's a long over due update. I've been able to do a junk mold of both the face plate, and the helmet. I then cast two face plates, and one helmet in smooth cast 300. I'm working on getting those cleaned up and making them as smooth as possible. I'm hoping I can get these all cleaned up, and ready for there final mold by the end of the week.

Thanks xero. The EL wire is awesome stuff. I just wish it were brighter. Had a chance to test the two pieces together. Every thing is lining up really well so far.

Wow, very nice. This is the version of Star Lord I like and cosplayed as him at SDCC 2014. I had a helmet made an it is okay, but a bit of a rush job. I am currently on the lookout for another cleaner, more custom fit to my head helmet. You have made some nice progress and design decisions. Subscribed for the finished product and possibly sales thread.

Re: Star-Lord Helmet Annihilation: W.I.P

Thanks Smiley. I'd love to see your helmet. I have never been able to find anyone that has made one of these before. I totally forgot about this thread. I'm getting pretty close to molding time for this bad boy. I'm going to try a core mold for casting. I'm hoping this will make casting these way more faster than rotocasting. But Don't really have much more to show, since it's been all fine detailing and sanding the hard to reach parts. But here's a little teaser photo.

Re: Star-Lord Annihilation Helmet: W.I.P

I love this! The movie look is cool but there's something about that British/military look of the comic costume and helmet that I just can't help but be drawn to.

I agree Harrisonp. I'm liking this one more and more everyday, than the movie version. Especially once all of the lights are put in, I think It'll be pretty bad ass.

Re: Star-Lord Annihilation Helmet: W.I.P

I'm excited/hopeful that they will adapt this look for GOTG2, are you working on the costume as well as the mask?

Re: Star-Lord Annihilation Helmet: W.I.P

One thing that you may want to look into is EL Panel. You can cover a wide area, it's nice and flat, and it back-lights quite well. I have used this in rigs where I didn't want to have EL Wire going everywhere or making visible turns on helmets and such. Just a thought. :)

It looks great!

That would be awesome if they went for more of the comic design. No, not working on any of the costume parts. I was just commissioned for the helmet.

I thought about it, but I didn't know how well it would take to curves. Do you think it would curve around the cheek area Sentry?

Re: Star-Lord Annihilation Helmet: W.I.P

I have used it several times on helmets and other items such as gauntlets and it curves quite nicely. You can also cut it to fit just about any shape. If you're not sure if you would like it, you may want to buy one and play with it to see if it will do what you want it to. I love both products, but I never liked having to bob and weave the EL Wire over an area when I could use a single panel cut to shape.

Re: Star-Lord Annihilation Helmet: W.I.P

I just ordered a sheet. I think the el panel will work better for the eyes. Hopefully I can use it for the entire helmet as well. Thanks for the heads up man.

My builder used led strips to light up the helmet.

Some pictures from SDCC 2014. First picture was taken by Seth Green of me in front of the Marriot right next to the convention center.

This year for NYCC 2015, I am thinking about doing a hybrid of this costume and movie Star Lord.

Re: Star-Lord Annihilation Helmet: W.I.P

Bit of a progress picture dump. I've been able to mold the face mask part of the helmet. I'm hoping I can get the top half molded by the end of the week. Finally reaching the finish line for this project.

Re: Star-Lord Annihilation Helmet: W.I.P

I was able to get the helmet molded and get a test cast done. The test cast came out perfect, and I should be able to use it. I'm hoping I can get these painted by the weekend, and get all the electronics in for the finished product by early next week.
