ST:TOS phaser - velcro to attach to belt??

Hello.

Searched and searched this info but came up empty-handed. I'm sure it's out there but I can't find it.

I know on ST:TOS they velcroed their phasers to their belts, but where is the velcro placed on the phaser? I found a picture in the archives on an unrelated topic which shows velcro just on the P1.

It doesn't look very safe to me - not much surface area to hold it in place. It looks especially dicey for going out in the rough and tumble public. Looks like you run the risk of the P1 separating from the P2, too.

Any thoughts from someone more knowledgeable would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Rick

That's pretty much how it was. The mid grade phasers were pretty
light, so the Velcro held well enough. But for rough action they were
tied to the belts. In the opening scene in "A Private Little War" you
can see them tied down with black thread.

I suppose the mid-grades were one-piece, so the P1 and P2 separating wasn't an issue.

What do people do for cons and whatnot? Obviously, you want to be able to pull out your phaser and communicator and then put them back securely.

Wife and I are doing TOS for Halloween this year, and we want to carry - and be able to use - our Diamond Select phasers and comms.

Anyone with other input?

Many thanks!

Rick

A couple of years ago, I dressed up in a ST costume for Halloween for a band gig, and I put velcro (sewn) on to the pants plus cut thin strips to stick on the P1 left side to attach to the belt. It held all night even with repeated pulls from the belt for "action" poses for pic. Still on the phaser after 2 years.

I seem to recall reading this in one of the "making of" paperbacks from the late 60's/early 70's, but I'm not 100% certain so I'm not gonna swear to it. On the Type I phaser, they put a velcro patch on the bottom; on the Type II phaser, they put the velcro on the left side of the Type I. Seeing how the Type II is hanging on Kirk's/Shatner's belt in this photo, that seems...logical. :cool

What about using magnets? That way you don't have to have ugly velcro sticking on the side of your phaser!

Just open up the phaser, put the magnets inside, and sew the other magnets into the belt and presto!

Thanks for the magnet suggestion.

I think slapping some sticky back velcro on the P1 will be much easier than figuring out how to open it up. I'm assuming like most lower end reproductions (AKA toys), the Diamond Select phasers are glued together rather than screwed.

And Velcro may be ugly, but it IS authentic!

A friend of mine recommended taking a length of ~1" wide black elastic, sewing a nice little tight loop on the thigh. That's what he does, and now, so do I.

It works pretty darn well, on the black handled phasers, at least. Keeps it very secure.

Sorry, I'm not understanding what you mean.

The loop is on the THIGH, of the pants? So you slip the handle into it? Like a sideways elastic belt loop? I would think the loop would have to be at your waist or hip.

Hey Rick,

I dress in TOS costumes at many shows and I use an AA Phaser to which I've attached Velcro to the P1 only.

It works really well. It has, on occasion, caught on something and been pulled off a time or two, but absolutely no damage to the Phaser at all.

Good luck and remember to post pics later!

Yeah, I'm going to try the velcro on the P1. Convenient, cheap, AND true to TOS. And a Diamond Select plummeting to the ground wouldn't be too great a loss, anyway.

Thanks for all the help, everyone.

Tiberius, I don't think anyone wants/needs pix of my toy phaser with a piece of velcro stuck on it!! :p Maybe if our complete outfits turn out nicely I'll post something in the costume forum.

Thanks again!

Hey Rick,

Yeah, I was referring to pics of the costume overall.

Good luck.

Hip, thigh, spleen, whatever. :D I guess it's maybe more hipish, but yeah, the elastic loop is sewn onto the pants in an area and at an agle so the phaser sits properly and snuggly.
