ST-TOS Communicators Origins Discovered

And the phaser was half of a pair of binoculars, and the Tricorder was an oven thermometer. Goodnight everybody! :)

That is awesome. One of the most iconic props of the last 50 years was the direct result of a guy looking at a found item and imagining it could be more.

Amazing.

I've heard this for YEARS! Wow. It's just nice to know that the rumor can finally be put to rest. That is an awesome discovery. :thumbsup

Pretty cool to see how the comm shell fits directly over the corner of the pencil case. :eek

Thanks for drawing our attention to this, mic. :thumbsup

True, but there was still a lot of vision to SEE the pencil box could be made into a hand com.. and he still had to cut it into four parts and make it smaller, and then invent the ring, control plate and Grill.

It is only little above taking raw plastic and sculpting it.

A lot of work still went into it.

Wow that was a cool story, what's really cool was I had one of those pencil boxes when I was a kid in the early 70's and I use to play with it as a giant communicator, of course it's long gone now:cry, btw I loved the sliding door.

I guess I need to be spending some more time over at TrekProps! Cool story, I'd never heard about the pencil box theory.

I was one of those "Junior Fans" in the 70's who knew without a doubt about the pencil boxes.

Nice to see it is finally confirmed!

My 5 year old self knew this, pity my 44 year old self forgot. Thanks for letting me remember that I also used my pencil case as a Phaser and Comm unit. :)

Those work really well. I first bought some of those in the late '80's and made a few ST3 comms out of them since they lack the surface texture. I will warn you that the styrene that these are made out of is a bit more brittle than model kit styrene. More like Bandai styrene than MPC styrene.
