I'm trying to help a friend out.. He wants to do a muscle suit to wear under spandex suits to "enhance" his musculature.

I remember seeing 'behind the scenes' pictures of the Spiderman muscle suits that were used for the films, I was hoping someone on here had them or could point me in the right direction.

He has some mis-conceptions about muscle suits and I'd like to have those for reference. (Basically... he thinks that a muscle suit is the same thing as "batman armor"... it's not quite the same)
Thanks guys!

your in luck gimme a sec to post, i was also going to take a stab at it but the big guns on the LOH i hear is giving it a shot so no need for me to waste time when some better can get it done.:thumbsup

Toby's muscle suit go's as far as his neck, just below his chin but the stunt muscle suit ends at the collar. From what i can tell the spidey 1 muscle suits has individual muscles pieces (some cast red) then attached to a jump suit of some sorts. While the spidey 2 muscle suit looks like a one piece jumpsuit that only the upper body was painted red, While the lower body left black.

whoa!
you mean he really wasnt that buff for the movie? hahahaha

No matter how buff you are, spandex takes away from it. The suits in Superman Returns took away 30% of Brandon Routh's perceived muscle mass due to compression, that all had to be built back up in muscle suit form. It also has the advantage of giving back definition lost in the compression, not just mass.

Wow, that's a very interesting fact, thanks for the heads up, I didn't know that :eek

Interesting stuff- does that mean Christopher Reeve's physique was compressed 30% by the spandex suit in the original Superman movie? if so - he was in teriffic condition--way back in 1977-78 when they filmed it.

Apologies for being slightly off topic, but this has always bugged me.
In the film, did they ever explain the jump between Peter Parkers 'homemade costume' and the final version (this one) ?

No- I guess the audience just has to assume Peter is an amazing spandex costume maker :) and improved his get up.

This is one of the things that I always hated from the superhero movies... An average Joe should spend over $2000 just for a sub-dyed suit and urethane webs...:rolleyes

The only guy who could simply buy everything and throw a suit together wuold have been Bruce Wayne, but In Batman Begins we saw him build, modify and paint his armor and arsenal... Good stuff!:)

Yeah, the entire "jump" from spray-painted sweatshirt to multi-thousand dollar professional costume being a drawing in a notepad was pretty lame.

Anyway, I don't know how much the outfit cut down on Christopher Reeve in the old films, the only exacting number I could find was from Superman Returns, and they were using milliskin, which has been described as wearing a full-body rubberband. The suits were all made to exacting measurements (with the exception of longer sleeves for flying suits, etc., so as to not expose his arms) and Routh carefully watched his diet so his weight wouldn't fluctuate during production (he stayed within 1 pound of his bodyweight during filming) which is probably how they came up with such an exact number for how much mass was lost. I think Reeve was still bulking up when filming began (didn't he train with David Prowse during preproduction?) so not only did his weight sway around a bit more but the costumes were much more forgiving in comparison.

Man, those are great pics. Thanks for posting those.
I try there are better pictures of the spidey muscle suit around, it's just no one is willing to share them i can understand that because few people give credit where credit is do. I have 2 of the pics in HI Res if anyone needs them PM me i wont be posting any more in open forum.

Also, the ribbing on the Spidey suit is not straight, but curves in all the right places in just the same way it would as if there were bulges warping the fabric. An excellent optical illusion helping sell the muscles.

Yup, the brick-texture is warped, the suit is preshaded and he's got a muscle-suit on, all so he doesn't look like a guy in spandex. :lol

I don't think the audience was supposed to focus on the intricate fashioning of the costume. (muscle suit, etc)

They creat the illusion that is is very thin costume that streches over his muscles, and easy to get on and off.

Seeing as how we're dedicated to all of that intricate detail, I find it difficult to remind myself that Joe Schmo Moviegoer doesn't even know the Spidey suit was different in each film, or that Kirk's wrist braids changed each season, or that Vader was sporting a different saber in each flick.
