[attachmentid=13241][attachmentid=13242] This are pre-production art for a Japanese-American production of a Speed Racer. They were done in 1992.The cars are on my "To Do" list of projects.Alexander

Have you seen the Tommy Yune comic book series cars?
They are more traditional looking cars in keeping with the original cartoon series but updated.
Very interesting looking, I have always intended to scratch a few but never got around to it.

:eek Gasp. Beauty is truly in the eye of the beholder. I've been an avid fan and collector of anything related to Speed Racer since the show first came to the US but I have to say that version in my opinion is ug-o-lee.

I have a hard time understanding why producers of the new series feel so compelled to update an already timeless and unique design of the Mach 5. :unsure

Great. Thanks Barry. I'm a big fan of late 1960s racing car design and Yune seems to have put together a nice blend of old and new. How about the other racers/bad guy cars? Could I bug you for some scans?

Here's a couple pinewood derby cars my sons and I carved. They are a little "loved" now having been slammed around the floors after the race. Some graphite smudges and some broken bits and the fins have been broken off. They were a big hit at the races of course. The Mach 5 is the only one with a fiberglass coating which has withstood the test of time. The uneven appearance is due to my carving 1 side and one of my sons carving (with help) the other. Tell me what the other car on the right is if you know. All of these started out as the standard pinewood derby parts--with added wood glued on the side.

Enjoy..

A few Speed racer items I have.
Completed Mach 5 model from an Imai kit that was completely customized.
Mach 4 (my version) made to look like the Johnny Lightning die cast.
Incomplete Streamlines Mach 5 and Shooting Star models.
Various die-casts that I picked up.

Those look like the ones I cast.Might be,I worked at Streamline for about 4 years.Alexander

The Shooting star model is modified quite a bit.
I reshaped the front wheel humps and added a scoop to the hood area but it's in the way of the windshield.
I also reshaped the rocker area and made it more flat then angled up towards the rear.
Then I added a lip around the rear of the car to make the brake light panel look like it was recessed.
Oh well, it sits like that because there was no windshield in the kit and I never got around to creating a buck and vacuum forming a new windshield.

Later, Barry.
