spaceships

Re: Evolution of the Movie space ship.

In keeping with the bolierplate and rivets theme, 1964's First Men in the Moon featured the Cavorite sphere.
A first of it's kind, not cylindrical or disc shaped, but spherical. No rocket exhaust either as it used antigravity for propulsion and was designed to roll to a stop upon reaching its destination; a precursor to the real-life Mars Rover missions which used airbags to bounce to a stop.

Fritz Lang´s
Die Frau im Mond / The woman in the moon in 1926.

IIRC the first somewhat scientifically based attempt at depicting a possible moon rocket concept.

Oh, and to my total surprise Google Videos hosts a complete version of the movie :

Unfortunately only with German text tables, sorry. But I am sure that a quick google translation will help ;)

And a great website on Rocket ships, both from movies and magazine illustrations.

I love that ship. I remember seeing First Men In The Moon on a double feature with Warlords of Atlantis and wanting toys of the two vessels soooooo bad. I ended up slapping together the Warlords diving Bell out of my mom's Sheer Panty House egg container and the First Men in The Moon out of a Christmas star toy I cut the tips off of.
