spacebobs droids

ive always fancied making a gonk droid as a beer fridge out of plastic boxes from staples, but they never seem strong enough and paint is hard to stick to them, even fiberglass doesn't stick, so where would you suggest I start spacebob mate?
 
Well Diaxus, although some fan made gonks look great made from ready made tubs I knew I wanted mine to be as real, I mean robot real as possible so mine is made from plywood and is very sturdy. There are little stabilising bits on the back of the feet to make it even more sturdy. You could certainly put a fridge in my one no problem.
 
Those are sweet! I am amazed you could look at a picture, draw it and end up with such beautiful driods. Thanks for sharing!
 
Its been a while since i asked so i thought i'd just bump it up...

I was wondering how I could go about cloning the droids, does anyone know of someone in the south of England who would cast one, they would of course gain the rights to sell them themselves.
i'm more into the pattern making aspect of these droids and not up with the molding side of things. i would just like to see them out there :)

I'm going to get to work on the box straight away, what do you think its made of ?, I'm thinking plywood.
Need a better pic of the writing on the inside of the door. ;)
 
I'd love to see more pics of your Gonk droid. Thinking of building one this summer, and any reference is great. I'm not looking for screen accurate on this one, just a mix of ideas from collected Gonk images... and this is one of the best..

NeoRutty I'll look through my plans and stuff for the gonk and post what i can,
The only way to get them to look right (unless you can find the original tubs that they were made from) is to scratch build, getting proportions right is the reason why it looks better than most..... and the paint job. as someone (wish i could remember who) on here said, The paint job is the first and last thing that you look at. True that.
 
That would be awesome... I've actually been looking for good schematics on it as well... I WOULD like to scratch build, rather than use tubs, for the very reasons mentioned above - I want to get mutliple use out of it...

Like make it a mini bar... or an outdoor cooler...

If you have any reference you're cool to share on dimensions that would be great... best I have is quotes like "uses so and so cubic tubs... maybe?" and then their Gonks are super thin and tall.

I'm just sorting it through now and i'll post more tomorrow, i used this pic with the action figure layered in on top to give me an idea as to the different ways designers/artists/peoples see the proportions to give me a starting point.

also i didn't want it to be taller than my artoo, that helped give me a height of 1080 mm not inc antenna.
After coming up with dimensions I added an inch or so to the width any way because i wanted to keep records in it.
 
Where did you get the sound files for the Gonk? I am working on one now, my first shot at making a droid.
 
Sorry Kord, my droids don't have any electrical elements at all yet so I can't advise mate. One day I'll get around to lights and sounds.
