John candy and joan rivers have passed, and daphne zuniga apparently wasnt interested. Dick van patren isnt someone who would likely be in the new one anyhow...i dont know about the guy playing col sanders. Then again, i wouldnt call him necessary to a sequel either.
They can't have Candy and Rivers from the main cast. They will surely be missed but it doesn't mean there still can't be a good script. Barf can be replaced by his son if they really want him there. (They can do a joke about dog years applying to Moggs!) and Dot Matrix can be "reprogrammed". Maybe they can get a few good TNG vs TOS jokes in there to explain things.
I DO hope they are able to get George Wyner in there. The chemistry bewteen him, Moranis and Brooks was perfect.

Strange... I'm seeing several places stating that she will be in it.
Maybe she just doesn't wanna sign up for a culture-wide referendum on how she looks in older age.
It's a paycheck but it's probably not a big one. And Mel Brooks won't be there this time, not in any significant way.
Anyway, the net says DZ is on board now.

High Anxiety is definitely underrated. Trivia about the shower scene: the bell hop who "stabs" Brooks was played by future director Barry Levinson:

Look, I grew up in the 70s and 80s. Mel Brooks was a comedic genius back in the day. He was making jokes that were relevant back then. Heck, the majority of them would simply come off as racist, not PC and would offend and alienate many. He can’t make those jokes today. Mel had his day. He should have retired years ago. Honestly, I don’t even think Spaceballs is funny…at all. Being a die hard Star Wars fan everyone assumes I love Spaceballs. But, man! Once I tell people I can’t stand that movie people look at me like I just slapped their mother! Mel just needs to go away quietly. This last grab for fame and glory is just embarrassing.
This movie will not be funny.

It's the same standard Hollywood pattern: at a certain age, actors and/or directors want to resurrect their old legacy projects for one last time - even if they don't have anything to tell with the story. This movie too will just be a rehash of the original, loaded with too many references and easter eggs. Spaceballs was a product of its time, and the past few years showed us that this hardly works anymore today - expect for the old franchise fans from back then. The new Ghostbusters movies were good/solid, but relied heavily on legacy themes and references. And as far as I can tell, they couldn't create a great new fan base among kids as Ghostbusters did in 1984.
Spaceballs 2 will probably suffer the same fate as the new The Naked Gun movie.

My expectations are pretty low for this. But I also don't see the harm in it.

As for Mel Brooks, the dude is pushing 100yo and 'Spaceballs' was never one of his peak works. For all we know, this sequel might be happening whether it has his blessing or not.
Is he selling out by doing this?
FFS, he sold out when he made the first one. He abandoned the racy provocative comedy of his 1970s works in favor of a goofy PG-rated Star Wars ripoff with Rick Moranis as Darth Vader.

Idk, but I noticed that Pizza Hut now has an extra flavoring (I guess?) you can add - it's called "Hut Dust." It sounds like something that could be heard in Spaceballs.
