Hey guys,

After watching space marine builds from Sylgian, Sandy, and a few others I have been inspired and decided I want to do a space marine. I had no previous knowledge of space marines, but have read up on them and even watched the Ultramarine movie. <strike>I'm not sure when I will officially start</strike> Cancel that I've basically started at this point, <strike>but had some extra material around and gave the power fist a go</strke> not going to use this one as I want to rebuilt it better.

Here's my helmet!

and for good measure my iron man suit, though I need to get some paint on it(I am a fan of gray so I am not in a hurry).

Re: Power Fist - first attempt

I figured I would take a picture of a finger I am building. It's made of wood with some very thin foam on top. From there I start working on making it bend and flex though I have a lot to improve upon.

The benefit of how I did this is that I can cut off and replace the finger section. I definitely want to do something better than the method I am using but it works for now. I really want to buy Sylgian's files but need a 3d printer to do so.

Re: Space Marine Power Fist - first attempt

I stopped on the hand until I can get some materials to create better fingers. I have a solution that works really well now and gives a better range of motion in the fingers and will spring back once I let off the tension. I found the solution in a youtube video.

Anyways just for fun I created a custom chain sword. This is not accurate and I did it only from a picture, but it looks cool and is very sharp. I hardened the foam probably more than I should have and it can scratch your skin pretty good. I also used cardboard for the spikes on the handle and at the base of the handle. I also put pvc pipe at both tips and overall this is a very sturdy chain sword. It is definitely not a toy.

This sword is only 36 inches, and I have downloaded the more elaborate chain sword .pdo and will be building it at about 45 inches long.

Re: Space Marine Power Fist - first attempt

Well I finally got some more foam last night at 8:30 PM and get to stop using scraps and foamies. I did the helmet at default scale and padded the inside so it would fit snugly around my head. Here's a video of the helmet staying properly around my face as I turn from side to side.

I also took pictures with the lenses in and out. I'm really happy with it, and now I get to start cleaning it up.

Now a little of my nerd side coming out: I can honestly say that I am more excited about this build than I was about the Iron Man suit, simply because I can see this as being possible now to be used in real life. The space marine suit is simply awesome and I plan on incorporating some cool things in mine if I can afford too. I'm also going to redo the chain sword.

JUST AN FYI - Oh that my was my daughter crying in the background and I ran straight to her after the video. I didn't realize my son had gone out the door and thought they were playing.

Re: Space Marine Power Fist - first attempt

Hey guys, I got excited about having foam again and tried out the bolt gun after seeing Sylgian's. I really like how his looked and I am happy with how mine turned out. I used new blades which are very sharp and cut very smoothly. I'm going to redo the chain sword next and will then contemplate actually starting the suit. I do know that I am going to finish my Iron Man before I start on the Space Marine though for sure.

Some cool things from that I did on the gun were that

1. I removed the grip and trigger from a toy gun my son has so you can actually pull the trigger.
2. The box on the back has a removable lid to store small objects
3. The clip is removable and can store things as well as well as the gun since it's hollow. Sylgian mentioned this in his post
4. The whole gun weighs less than 2 pounds for sure and probably closer to one.
5. When I make another gun I'm going to make the slide on the side actually operate
6. The barrel is only about 2.5 inches external, though i rolled some foamies inside that actually make it about 15 inches long inside the gun.
7. I used a skull for the front sight

Well here's the bolt gun.

I am currently prepping the helmet that I did yesterday and will put some plasti-dip on it soon. I am going to build a few different helmets in the different versions. This one is the Mark VII. I also have the grey knight terminator, the Mark V, and the Mark III.

well after working on and looking at my first attempt at the mark VII helmet, I decided I wanted to do it again. There were a lot of things that I wanted to add and also felt I could have been done better for myself and so I went for the mark VII v.2

I've also just bought Space Marine for the PS3 and have watched the UltraMarine movie. Based upon this and the other research I have done, I think I might built an ultramarine, simply because they are the best. I know that statement is very debatable, but from my limited internet research, They seem to be bad ass. I know I don't want to go the chaos route, even though a costume like that would be awesome if done by the correct person.

These were some images I found for inspiration but I am very limited in my knowledge of Space Marines and would love some awesome examples I could try to build. If anyone has any advice or tips on the WarHammer 40K universe and could guide me to some awesome images or suits as examples I would appreciate it.

Re: Space Marine Power Fist - first attempt

I added a lot of damage to the helmet simply because a Space Marine never retreats and my idea is that they want show off their battle wounds like they do their badges of honor. I'm going to really take my time and try to get this done properly. After watching Space Marine builds from a few people on here, I've been inspired and want to add some nice details to my suit.

high quality helmet with shoulder pads.JPG

I couldn't help myself and built the shoulders. These are really massive and take up over 4 feet of foam each!!! I couldn't believe it lol. I am really happy again since they match up really well against each other and have the same overall dimensions. They both stand 10.5 inches at the bottom of what I imagine will be a mounting point, 14.5 inches at the top, and are about 18 inches wide each. I'm just hoping those dimensions aren't way out of whack or something. If anyone can let me know I would appreciate it. I have a lot of work to do on them to make them completely round and am thinking about putting putty or something else on the surface since I don't image these will have to flex all that much. Can anyone let me know if I'm wrong or not?

I also did more work on the bolt pistol. I plasti-dipped it as well as added some faux bolts. I used a trick I saw on youtube to make it look like it's two pieces bolted together. I added some detail to other areas as well and will continue to add to it.

Re: Space Marine Build - Ultamarine or grey knight or someone else?

So I did the left arm and I also did the left hand. I started over on the power fist and am really happy with the current state. I really want to buy Sylgians files and am trying like crazy to get myself a solidoodle. I will also need to convert the files for a right hand since my power fist will be righty. I will post pic's of the power fist once I get it further along.

well I decided to do an ultramarine and painted my helmet. I started another post to ask some questions about the topic and don't need to continue it other than as a discussion at this point.

Well here is my helmet. I'm very happy with it and am going to continue to work on it to improve it and to try to blend everything together better. The ear pieces are also not finished so I will need to do some more work on those.

I made some updates to the paint work on my helmet. I'm still learning so this will be a process.

So I completed the right arm today and now have the arms, hands, shoulders, and helmet built. I still need to do a lot of work on the shoulders and won't have them done for probably about a week or so at least.

Just for fun I wanted to create a bionic eye, and it went really well. Then I remembered a cool graphic I found so I modified the bionic eye and went crazy lol. Please leave me feedback as this is completely one of a kind. I did it in about 2 hours and it's still very rough. The hoodie is going to be permanently attached as part of the helmet/mask and is no way connected to or attached to my shirt.

bionic eye - partial helmet.JPG

I know the graphic is different than what I created but when I first looked at the image I saw what I created in my helmet. Pretty cool how that works I guess.

I'm pretty sure they're scaled right but let me know if they aren't. I will take some pics today of my shoulders. I added an extra layer on top and will be adding the trim pieces to the edges soon. I also need to do a lot of detail work on them since I only have the basic shape done at this point. I've found some cool pics that give me ideas on how to attach the arms to the shoulders and the shoulders to the chest without reducing mobility.

3d power fist emblem.JPG
So I printed out Sylgian's power fist emblem though right when it finished it stopped right on the piece and caused a blemish in an otherwise good product. I don't think I will use this on my suit since it's his design and he already used it, but I wanted to build it just for the sake of doing so, and because I just got my 3d printer!

shoulder ball joint.JPG
I also found these ball joints and plan on using these in the shoulder section. I will also need some additional support pieces but these should give me some good play hopefully. I grinded out the ball as well as the pieces where it will sit so that it has a little more freedom to play.

I also built another helmet, and this one is a vast improvement in terms of my cuts and the overall build. These pic's don't do it justice at all but the edges are very smooth and most of them line up without any edges or gaps(almost seamless) I still have a lot of improving to do but am making progress towards my goal of having no seams or lines visible at all.

The added on piece is not optimal as I built it in place and could've done a better job but I'm very happy with it since it's completely custom.

So it's been a little bit since I made any updates but I've been playing with my 3d printer and it will be a huge part of my costumes going forward. I really want to add an animatronic hand and thought about doing a power fist but now am just doing an animatronic hand that will be extended to make the arms look more proportional to the suit.

And I now have the hand!

I just made a robohand on my 3d printer and modified the files to scale them up 1.5x. I also modified the .skp file since some of the files were too large for the build plate once they were scaled up.

robohand 1.JPG
robohand 2.JPG

I need to string them up to make them function now and I need to get some elastic. I can't wait to try it out. I'm thinking about making it look like a robotic arm ie iron hands but I'm not sure yet.

well I've been playing with my robohand as I've been working on other things and I just made a major break through on the functionality aspect.

This is a video of me picking up and putting down a 5+ pound bag of containers of baby formula. I have also now just held a sword using the robohand for over 5 minutes and while I wouldn't recommend swinging it, it wasn't really going to fall either.

robohand holding sword.JPG

I've also started on a left handed robohand and it's pretty massive. Each piece maxes out the build plate on my S2 and its going to be a robotic hand for my deathwatch ultramarine.

I can now also hold my bolt gun using the robohand!

it's all robohand.JPG

Last pictures shows that my hand is flexing the robohand and not holding the gun. The robohand presses the gun back against itself and my knuckles a little bit which creates enough pressure to hold these objects.
