Slothfurnace's ANH Luke Graflex Saber chassis. PICS, Step by step.

reading this thread plus going to Science Meets Imagination yesterday has really rekindled my inner Jedi. it's high time i finished a new saber.

I do have some pics I need to edit and look over, but as far as a kit goes, I am afraid by the time I offered this as a kit, I'd have to go ahead and just sell the completed thing. There's more tiny parts in this thing than I can count, and I would probably have to charge so much for it that it would make more sense just to make a small run of these sabers and sell them as handmade complete units.

what about a run of internals and let the buyer do the body work? that way we could put it in any saber we liked.

If I did a run of internals, it's no small extention of work to do the whole thing. I put over 50 hours of work into the internals, and I think the skin took a total of 4 of that. I don't think I'll be doing a run, if I do any copies at all, it will be via commision basis.

Also, I have been sitting on this for a while, but it's public now, so here goes.

I work at BioWare on Star Wars: The Old Republic, as some of you know, and a few months back, they asked me to do the lightsaber assembly for the game.

Naturally I built the in game assets to match my ANH Saber internals. Now that they showed the video of the saber assembly at PAX, I can show it off to my friends.

This marks the last step of the ANH Graflex build (not that I am done with display, the ESB skin, etc.)

Thanks for watching the build progress!

That is awesome!! :love Both your saber and its counterpart in the game!!!

:D

help me decide...

Single saber display, or

All three?
I am leaning towards the single, as it's more elegant, and will look cleaner once I cut that extending piece off the middle.

Looks great! Single seems much better!

You can make 1 for each saber. You can also change the photos to fit the evolution of the character.

yup, a different display for each would be better I think...and great choice of woods!

Good Idea. Maybe try matching the outfits with the color of the wood.

For ESB, an orange wood like Chakte Viga and a tan wood combo would look cool.

For ROTJ, a black or dark gray wood with a brown stripe would look cool.

another +1 on separate displays.

Single display it is, then.

But for now, here's a minor update...

Two weeks ago, I sent off designs for the most accurate HP44 bus board replica I could make, and got them back from China today!

These have the slightly offset thin trace, coming from a rounded transition section, as well as the diagonal traces on the back, leading to round traces. I based by design on this shot from Parts of Starwars, the HP-44 Bus card.

question...this started as a graflex 2 cell....you indicated that you ended up machining slots into a piece of scrap capped tube to make the bottom grip portion. when you're installing the d-ring, it looks to be a graflex cap you're affixing it to...did you just end up getting a 3 cell bottom? and when you say "capped", where's a good place to get capped tubes....i'm building on a 2 cell and don't want to use the standard break out caps for the bottom...thanks and sorry if this is something that's been covered

Yes, you are the first one to mention that. I started out with a capped stainless tube, and machined the slots to engage the clamp. Later, halfway through the build, I ran across a 3 cell back, which I used instead for the final build.

Not sure where you get the capped stainless ends, as I found that one In my scrap pile.

Thanks, hope that helps.

I never saw that you had circuit boards made!

Awesome, have you sold them all?

Yes, I am completely out at the moment. If and when I do another run, I was going to get them gold plated, but that would raise the price of investment significantly, so I am kind of waiting for an influx of cash before I go that route.

Hi Slothfurnace, I know this post is old but I have to make this question , in your a new hope Mark Hamill signed the back of the saber is stainless steel but it has the graflex stamp.
Was this custom made or you stamped the cap or the cap was from other flashgun? I want to make a full stainless steel Luke A new hope/ESB saber .
BTW ...Your work is amazing....(y)cheers
