Slipknot's 2014 Jan-Feb Sculpture Contest Entry

Hey guys and gals, I thought I'd get this ball rolling!
My plan is to sculpt a man-bat hybrid creature, in the style of some classic vampires such as Gary Oldman's Dracula.

I will be using WED clay.

I've been sculpting for about eight years now. I just picked up portrait sculpting pretty recently. I plan on taking Dick Smith's advance course as soon as I can make the time.

As for any tips I can offer, I'd suggest you learn anatomy if you want to pick up sculpting. I'm slowly going back over it and it's a very needed skill. Especially for portrait sculpting. Anatomy is your friend.

If all goes well I'd like to start around next Wednesday and give you guys a step by step explanation of what I'm doing.

You hit the nail on the head about anatomy. I was a medic in the Army for four years and learned quite a bit about anatomy, but needed to learn additional anatomy when I began sculpting. It is absolutely essential! :) Can't wait to see your sculpt.:popcorn

I started about three hours ago and here is my progress so far. I'll have "professional" photos soon hopefully!

Pictures and "in-progress" pictures to follow!

A step by step of what I did. They're only iPhone pics, so please bear with me!

Making the armature

Hand for scale (didn't have a banana)

Blobs of clay

Angry brows are a MUST!

How it stood a little bit before I bagged it up.

I'd like to add the fact that I am honored to be able to compete with such talented people on this lovely community. The fact that I can be called competition to such fantastic sculptors makes me feel like a winner inside, no matter how I place.
Good luck to anyone else entering the contest and I look forward to what you create!

I have a quick update on the sculpt! I'm starting to get used to the WED clay, but I'm having a hard time judging when I can put detail in. It's still a little soft. Anyways, here is my crappy iphone photo to hold us off until I can get some professional photos!

That's amazing. When you get some spare time, please do a video tutorial of how you did the eyes... I suck at eyes and similar and yours are really good.

Well done.

Thank you guys, I appreciate it!

I'm fine tuning some things here and there but I think I'm pretty close to calling it done.

Squirrel: There are very talented people all over this board, and guess what? You're probably one of 'em! I'd love to see you enter and see what you come up with.

DivideByZero: I can certainly try to make a video.
Looking back at the pictures these eyes were done pretty quick and dirty.
Until I have time to make a tutorial I want you to look up Philippe Faraut, and Joanna Mozdzen on YouTube. You can learn so much from watching them work.

Hey guys, I have some photos and a bit of a personal update. I'll post the personal update after the pics!

Now for the update. I really apologize for the photos. I know I said I hoped for professional photos but my Father just had knee replacement surgery. I just don't have the money for a camera. I hope you can catch all the details in the crappy phone photos! I'd like to refine it just a little bit more but I don't believe I'll have the time.

Thanks for looking, thanks for your consideration, and good luck to every contestant!

Awesome! I'm loving the ears and wrinkles on this guy.

Sorry to hear about the camera, since camera phones have good quality nobody really uses a camera…camera anymore. The pictures turned out pretty good, I can still see all that tedious texture ya did.

If you have time one of these nights you should take one more photo and play around with some of the lighting. go heavy on light from above or below, like he's in a cave. :)

Thanks guys!

JonKross, I have a pretty nice little home made light set up that I want to use, but I need someone to hold the lights!
Hopefully I'll have some company over this weekend to snap more pictures.

I really dislike the eyes right now, and will probably pop ball bearings in to make them perfectly round and even.

Alright guys, here are my final photos! There are quite a few things I wish I could go back and change, particularily making more of the body area, as I feel like I've cut it a bit too inwards from the shoulders. I also wish my armature was as solid as it was. I was able to turn the neck just a tad, but not nearly as much as I wanted. Oh well, Live and learn!

I'd also like to say again, I feel honored to compete with such talented people on this fantastic site. Thank you.

A special thanks to JonKross for the lighting tip!

That's what i'm talking about! Nice job man, That lighting just makes those lines pop, shows off all that detail. Shows off those cool brows and cheek bones too, such attitude.
Also loving that avatar:D
