Silicone Masks

Has anyone here created any realistic Silicone masks? I have seen some online that are amazing. I was wondering how well they hold up, is it worth the price of Silicone vs Latex?

no comparison in my opinion wether your looking to go the mask way or display bust

you can get great movement depending on the fit which seems to be the only problem with silicone masks, finding a head armature to sculpt on that will please everyone ( never gonna happen ) lol but compared to the latex masks for wearing so long as you can afford to laydown around 4 times the amount of what the mask would be in latex it is worth the price and so long long as the best silicone is used it should last forever so long as it's looked after unlike latex that will break down over many years and dry up or turn to gunk :)

Ok, i know how to make a latex mask using a plaster mold. With the silicone... Is it the same procedure?

best thing is to use a 3 piece fibreglass mould. 1 piece from the front of the ears forward and the back split in 2 down the back of the head. plus the core needs to be hollow , either urethane or fibreglass this is to incorporate the injection tube. weve made lots of these. if you type hushmapuppy into youtube youll see me and my mate Daz creating a silicone davros mask for a customer. thing you realy need for a good fit is to do a lifecast, cast this up in plaster then carve back the eye sockets and mouth area to give a tighter fit, remould that then you will have a good core. its more complicated than a simpple latex mask and takes some practice. best thing i can reccomend is to look at Neill Gortons creating character prosthetics in siliocne. it shows the entire process and takes all the guess work out. it shows a full head appliance but by using say platgel 00 or halving the amount of deadener of the gel 10 or by using ecoflex 30 it will give a good mask.

Just stumbled across this thread. Great info piehead! Do you happen to be on theeffectslab forum?

Yeah, I saw that on CNN several days ago...just crazy!

Some guy wore one to rob a bank a few months ago too...they're that good! :lol

If you are a white guy that are using a black mask , remember to cover your hands with gloves or something.

have yo checked out composite f.x. too, they do nice work and make silicone gloves to match the masks. cheaper than spfx but extremely good quality. i believe made from ecoflex 30 and some have soama foama silicone foam added to reduce weight in things like tentacles etc. they also do custom jobs at very good rates. they have just done an awsome red skull for a customer. that said we do custom silicone jobs as well.

im working on another one right now as it happens, done a couple of freddy's.

you cant beat a good silicne mask, if you get the fit right, its more a prosthetic than a mask.

ot. Ian, you going to imats next year?

Yeah Rich hope to catch up for a pint or three, going to l.a for monsterpalooza in april too. gotta say mate your recent works have blown me away , how youve come on since te ole mfx forum is astonishing !! been busy on shoots recently and done a bit down at mfx too. all good fun mate. hope youre well and busy !!

I've been contemplating doing a Batman mask in 2 pieces (neck piece and a socketing head piece) or one piece silicone. I'm thinking this is the route I'm gonna want to go now.

no...someone DID use a realistic mask to rob banks..about the time this thread was around, nearly two years ago..
