Sherlock Holmes and Watson.

Hi all,

I guess this is my first official post besides the introduction thread, anyway im on a quest to have Holmes and Watson costumes done in time before Halloween. I have barely just started to do the research and I figured I would start here since mostly everyone here are costuming experts. I was just curious if anyone else has looked into replicating any of the costumes or if anyone has any high res production or promotional photos. Any help, advice or suggestions would be very much appreciated.

I'm guessing you are basing this on the recent film not an older version. The costumes are currently on show as the London Film museum which i am hopeing to visit in a few weeks. Not sure what their policy on photos is but I will get as much reference as I can.

Good luck to you on this endeavor. Holmes isn't so bad because he's pretty disheveled, even when he's dressed up, but Watson is going to cost you. His costumes in that film were fantastic and VERY well tailored. Unless you or someone you know can tailor (entirely different from knowing how to sew), you'll have to find one to get this done.

there are a bunch of screengrabs on google, I would start there and print out as much reference as possible and then consult a tailor or seamstress. Either one would be familar with how the clothes would go together and what materials things are made of.

In the end the tailoring probably will not be that bad or challenging, it's the materials that'll be expensive or difficult finding a more reasonable alternative that looks close to the original source.

Yes I am planning on doing the versions from the recent film and I have a few screen shots. I saw the movie in theaters 4X to really study which suits they wore in the movie. I happen to have an aunt who is a professional seamstress that would be able to help out so this shouldn't be too difficult to get done. I figured Watson would be a little more challenging but I'm determined to get this done.

Boy. You are full of misinformation aren't you?

The tailoring WILL be and always is the hardest thing. It is hands down the most difficult skill in the sewing world to master. This is why good tailors charge up to 5k to make a suit. This isn't to say you can't find a good deal on tailor work. Many foreign tailors will work for less than, say, a NYC second gen tailor. Also, Indy Magnoli tends to have great prices on his tailored items and has a great reputation on this board.

The materials can get pricey, but you may also get lucky. There are a couple of places in NYC where you can get great prices on wools. Mood Fabrics and MJ Cahn. You can visit their website and order swatches. Both usually have more stock than they list on the site so its advised to call and talk to someone about what you're looking for.

If you post pics of what you're looking to get made I can help identify the fabric type. I have a rather good eye for that type of thing.

My apologies. But I can guarantee you that I've forgotten more about this subject than you know, and when I warn that tailoring, something that I have studied for years, is difficult and you correct me, I take offense.

Perhaps I could have been less snide about it.

Woah settle down guys its all good Im open to everyones suggestions and advice no need to get on eachother like that everyone is entitled to their own opinion. All you guys are doing is just helping me out more by adding your input, come on now the more the merrier right?
