Limited Run Shawshank Redemption Rock Hammer Project Run

Wow. And I thought our customs were bad. If you're at all concerned Emma, perhaps asking Ss to enclose a note that reads "This is a non-functioning movie prop replica from the Shawshank Redemption and is strictly for display purposes only" . . . . that usually works for us here.

Haha yeah, you never know! It can be a pain sometimes! Can you just not mention "hammer" ? XD Like "movie prop" and that's it? Or will they find this too vague?

Production update: 8/31/14

Metal fab has begun! I should have pics of the first metal hammer piece (no grips yet) in the next few days. :)

Once I get the first hammer/tang part looking perfect I'll have the rest knocked out. When I get them all in my hands I will be meeting with the CNC wood fabricator to have all the handles made. From there I will get the correct stain and finish for the handles, assemble them with the cutlery rivets and get them in the mail.

Project update 9-7-14

So I want to post progress pics but in doing so I need to also explain what will be different on the final parts. So, keep in mind that this is a first attempt.

First change will be the bottom of the tang. It is not shaped correctly when aligned with the grip. The final part will be more rounded at the bottom matching the grip perfectly.

This pic shows the hammer head sharpened point. The photo was taken from the underside. The point looks good in the sample, it just needs to be a bit sharper.

This photo shows the slight bevel needed on both sides of the hammer head where it meets the tang. I've highlighted the area in red. The bevel is a standard 45 degrees and should be approx. 1/16" in depth.

The metal pieces are done and in my hands! I couldn't be happier with the way these turned out, absolutely gorgeous pieces.

The rainbow coloring where the tang and hammer head meet comes right off with a little lemon juice, so no worries there. The edges on these are sharp and crisp, so this will come to you guys as a new, out of the box looking hammer...just like the hero piece that Red removed from the paper wrap when he got it. I will leave it to you guys if you want to weather the prop by softening the edges and wearing the stain on the handle a little bit.

And, speaking of the handles....the prototype wood handle set is also in the works. I met with my 3D CNC wood guy today and gave him my plastic handle sample as well as one of the finished metal pieces. As soon as I have the first set of handles in my hands I will be posting pics and an update.

This is coming together every bit as good as I had hoped. Very excited to share pics of a final hammer with you guys

(p.s. the cigar box that this hammer is leaning on is Andy's from Shawshank, and it's for sale in the JY ;) )

HaHa! That's the first thing I thought when I got these...I was wondering where I could find a soft rock wall to recreate the scene where Andy starts carving his name :p

Project update 10-4-14

The wood handles are routed out and ready for finishing work. I'll be sanding them up today and tomorrow and putting a coat of stain on them. I should have pics to post of a completed piece by Monday. :)

Maybe it's just the pic, but do the handles look a little thin?

It's probably the pic, and the fact that they are rough cut and haven't been rounded out. My prototype handles have all been made using 1/4" thick material, and these are the same. If you look at the screen shot of Red holding the hammer you can see the tang is 1/8" thick and the handles are 1/4" thick.
