Shaun of the dead

Has any one copied the cricket bat that Shaun uses in the movie? Just wondering I figure it would be a prop that shouldn't be to hard to duplicate if you know what type of stick he uses.

Yes, my wife makes a 1/3 copy and full-size.

The full-size bat has extra blood, hair and gore. :)

"you got red on you"

if you liked 'shaun', check out the tv series 'Spaced', same people and just as hilarious

I have been looking for Spaced. I know they just released it in the UK again. Has it made it here yet?

Here's one I made a few years ago:

and the graphics:

or a 300dpi jpg: Graphics

It's pretty straight forward. Buy a cricket bat (there are sites, if you look around, where you can get them for $25-30; no need to get anything fancy. Sand off the graphics, which are usually stickers. Beat the hell out of it. Weather it with black tea and coffee. Dry. Print the above graphics on clear waterslide paper and apply.

Mist it with red oxide primer here and there (for the little blood sprays) and then rub down with different acrylic reds. Clearcoat. Done.

Edited to add: yes, I did those graphics from scratch, and yes, I made the top part up. So, it's not screen accurate. :)

I was just going to say that the graphic at the top isn't right - but you beat me to it. :)

The 'real' bat is anywhere between 60-80 years old according to the MCC, unfortunately the bat 'Shaun' took on tour with him wasn't the one pictured in the movie.

The method you described for weathering and gorifying is almost exactly the same as my wife's method. For some reason she finds smacking the hell out of the bat on a hard surface the most pleasurable part..... :)

Hi Blad,
I was wondering if you can pm me some info on how to get one of the full size Bats made by your Wife? I've been searching for a movie accurate one for a long time.
Thanks alot , Tom

Cool prop.

I loved Spaced and Shaun of the Dead too - I saw an orriginal screen used 'Shaoun' shirt earlier this year complete with blood stains...

Great movie.

Those are nice bats with blood and all. But what are the bats you guys are using as being close and is on the low cost end. Which one do you recommend to start with?

The original bat is 60-80 years old. The nice thing about cricket and cricket bats is that as long as you get an adult size that shape hasn't really changed in the last 100 years, just decals and colours. You'll see details such as 'weight reduced shoulders' and 'short handle', but you'd be hard pressed to actually see a difference. Cheap Indian bats are fine as it's the weathering and decals that make the bat look right.

There isn't any point buying a vintage bat as early bats had the makers name and details embossed on the blade, sanding that off will ruin the finish. Modern cheap bats costing £15 or so have peel off decals are still made of willow and will give you a good starting point.

Edited to add: You should get a bat with a black rubber handle sheath. This is quite original, 60 year old bats (the ones I used at my Grammar School.) had rubber grips.

Oh cool. I was thinking of starting a thread about Shaun's cricket bat, and lo, here one is. :)

Has anyone found a place cheaper than eBay selling suitable ones?

thanks.

A beach kiosk down the road from me does a bat that's probably pine for £2.99. However it would cost £25 to ship it to the US.

Hi Blad,
So do you add the screen accurate decals and the coloring to the bats you sell or are they already there?
I was wondering if you had any other pictures of the ones you sell?
Oh, and I've pm'ed you back. :)
Has anyone made a Shaun badge?
Very much enjoying all of the Shaun talk.
Tom

I did a quick and dirty Shaun of the Dead costume for our annual Zombie Walk here in Nashville last weekend. Total cost about $25, including shirt, tie, and pants from Goodwill, fake blood from a halloween store, home-made cricket bat from wood scraps in the basement, and badge from one of the posts here on the RPF. Not bad for about 2 hours of work.

Check out the pics here:

Funny thing Chris,

I just watched this movie this past weekend and I was wondering if this was a popular costume and you actually came to mind as to someone who had the right "look" for Shaun. I was right.

LOL

Yeah, several people here said the same thing. I let my moustache grow out to have the full effect with the goatee. I might keep it that way for a bit...

Can anyone repost the graphics for the cricket bat? My son has decided he wants to be Shaun for Halloween.
