shadow guard helmet revision

rundown

Hey there. I'm making the imperial guard helmet from starwars.
I also regret starting this due to all the curves that needs to be smoothed out.
Next time I might make a helmet with more edges.

that aside, I first made the 3d model of the helmet myself.
You can get it here: http://www.therpf.com/f24/starwars-guard-pep-file-free-189457/

I didn't take pictures of it in pep stage. But you can still see some naked pep parts in my build.

The right picture is the helmet half an hour later.

Still got to fill lots of places, even them,...

I can see now why this helmet isn't done so mutch. Progress goes very slow.

Re: guard helmet wip

Hi Rundown,

Very curious to see how this turned out. Did you have time to finish it?
Thanks for the pep-files. :)
Cheers!

Re: guard helmet wip

I'm probably the slowest prop maker there is. Still isn't finnished because of the winter. Now the sun is finally shining again I can continue working on my garden.

I accidently broke the dome, it got shattered after I dropped the helmet. So i had to fix that. I think i've added like 5 more layers of polyester and it's becoming somewhat like the shape I want it to be. Still not there yet though.

That isn't bondo is it?

Indeed, its some kind of polyester filler. Since they don't sell bondo in this country. For the specific brand I could get back to you on that one in a few days as i'm away from home atm.

Also the base was a pepakura model hardened with polyester resin, then added a base layer of polyester plaster containing fiberglass so I could build up the smooth curves. (these are the darker parts you see)

I see it is starting to look good btw

Re: guard helmet wip

Thx guys!

The brand is called protecton. Something german. havn't seen it before in other shops. Only at my closest diy shop.

Anyway, back on track. I filed the eye slots and they are very smooth now! also had allot of grooves to fill. Sometimes you just can't putty a small bubble. So i bought some finnisher to fill them. Still need allot of sanding. Stupid thing is this takes ages to dry. So i'll be working on that this week.

Re: guard helmet wip

So i'm using this wierd thick sticky finnisher for small airbubbles and dimps. Wich amazingly sands down very easily to a smooth surface.
Don't like it though. But the end is nigh!!

Re: guard helmet wip

Looks great! Im currently working on a imperial guard as well. The only bad thing about these helmets it that you need the robes or you look really dopey. So I'm going to have to make the robes as well. But the helmet is my priority at the moment.

Re: guard helmet wip

My hope for not having to smooth things out have bin crushed. Ended up finding a few more air bubbles that needed to be filled.

Re: guard helmet wip

Great work! You are a braver man than I. I've stayed away for this helmet simply because curves have proven to be my foil (despite my best efforts).

I can't wait to see the final reveal.

Re: guard helmet wip

Yea, it's a real pain!

Anyway, today I thought it was smooth enough to give it a coat of primer.

I hated to see every pit I didn't see before. Now it looks like i've got a long way to go

Re: Imperial guard helmet build

So yea, it's sunday and I thought I was going to finnish the helmet today...
Untill i noticed i'm out of primer. Everything is closed today. fml!

But when I wet the helmet i can slightly see the pits and uneven parts, takes longer but hey, gotta do what you gotta do!

Re: Imperial guard helmet build

Looks awesome! I've got a love/hate relationship with the first primer coats.... You get to see the piece in a solid color which is great, but then all those hidden imperfections pop up.

Re: shadow guard helmet build, first coat!

Gave it a 2nd layer today after fixing some small spots again. After this one more and then comes the clearcoat!
