Serenity kit progress... WIP

Hey all,

Since I'm sorta bouncing between projects right now waiting for parts'n'things I thought I'd show some progress on one of them. I finally got 'round to starting work on my resin kit of Serenity, mastered by the very talented "Styrofoam Guy".

So far I've made some progress on the paint job (sorry for the bad pics... no time for a proper shoot). I'm going for the not-often-seen "patchy" multi-colored look shown on the cover of the Official Companion Volume 2. Most others seem to go for the silver-grey look.

Technique used so far:

Sprayed the ship with Plasticote silver metallic. Gave it a couple thinned out washes of Tamiya acrylic, which I proceeded to rub off with window cleaner after it was dry. Next, I airbrushed the patchwork (without masking... I was lazy that day) and then tore most of it off in flakes with duct and cheap masking tape. Last, I gave the whole thing a coat of matte lacquer to dull the metal sheen a little and even out the look.

Now all I gotta do is start on the detailing!

Thanks for the info. I think your paint job really suits this kit... looks worn. Very nice.

I think I'll hold out for a 1:72 kit... but I guess that'd be one big mutha. :)

Ya know, I never really noticed Serenity's color scheme on Volume 2's cover! :confused Your paint job looks fantastic!!:thumbsup

Well, the surface was more than a little inconsistent throughout the episodes! Even the detailing on the 3d models they used seems to vary significantly.

Areas that look completely different in the various versions (that I have noticed):

- engine struts and engines
- "neck" details
- the rear ailerons (or whatever they are) that wrap around the bottom

Ya know, I never really noticed Serenity's color scheme on Volume 2's cover! :confused Your paint job looks fantastic!!:thumbsup

I am glad to see this coming along,

At first glance I thought "the colours look so odd" However the more I look at it the more I like it. It could be the perception that a space ship should be metallic in colour.

When I was looking at colours to paint my model I took every metallic paint and sprayed a sample on a sheet for a side by side reference. When checking the colour orthos I was surprised to find that almost all of the colours did not match. Alclad II White Aluminum was the only colour that seemed useful.

I also liked the chipped paint effect.

Nice work, it's a very unique style of painting a ship. I would have never thought of that technique, but I like the effect. :) I'll bet it looks even better in person.

Dave :)

In some scenes on the show, the ship almost looks flat beige in color!
