Seeking help with design of shoulders/upper arms for G1 cartoon/comic Megatron rig

Hello,

I recently wore my G1 9.1 scale Optimus Prime toy costume rig to the Calgary Comic Expo on April 26th, and wore it twice the prior Halloween. It was made mostly with double-thickness cardboard, 3M duct tape, and painted with latex. Except for the head & grip of the gun, it is an exact 9.1 scale to the toy.

I'm almost done re-touching the paint & packaging and hope to sell it on EBay in the near future, as it takes up a lot of space...space I want to use towards my next rig! =)

This Halloween (& for next April's Comic Expo) I intend to build a G1 comic/cartoon Megatron rig. I'd like to have a good range of movement yet still support the upper arms some as I don't know how else they'd not sag downwards. Another big difference is the chest/body will be narrower so my shoulders will be more outside the rig. Also, I intend to do a half-mask and paint my lower face & neck.

Perhaps the biggest challenge I see is how to do the shoulders/upper arms well. For Optimus, the upper arms had an elastic band at the bottom for the arm to be held with; at the top there was a piece of Velcro. A strap was run through the rig & behind my neck connecting the upper arms to keep them in roughly the right position & height.

However, after a marathon 8 hours of wearing the rig I must say my shoulders were hurting from the lack of movement! Also, it was hard to adjust the upper arms when they were off-angle.

At the moment I'm thinking of trying to build onto this hockey shoulder pad system. It opens in the front, and Velcro could be used to hold the front together. The upper arms are a 3 panel set with Velcro to close around the upper arm. If I build the rig onto this though, I think I'd have to slip on the chest & upper arms from underneath..?

If you've any ideas on how to make a good shoulder setup, please let me know!

Thanks!

Dude, you're posting this in the wrong forum. This is the Marvel Section.

Sorry, which would be ideal then? I thought it'd be Marvel as that's where they got started with their comics...
