Sculpting A Bio...decided To Give It A Try: Update 7/20/13

Bummer! As my dad would always say whenever I messed something up...Did you learn anything?  :D  I am sure you did. Sorry to hear about the setback but I bet the next attempt will be even better.

I can rebuild it! :) I learned allot, and believe that it will be even better than before. Thanks for the encouragement guys, it keeps me moving forward!

How much Monster clay did you get to do this? I am curious how much it takes to do a sculpt or how much might be needed to do a skin for example...

What you saw on the first sculpt was just a little over 5 lbs.  It really depends on the armature.  Since I did a mold of the inside of one I already had, it was very close to begin with.  This time around It will probably end up being closer to 7 lbs.  I blocked it in thicker than last time, and have used 5 just for that.  I won't be adding as much like i did the first time, so I still don't see needing more than 7 lbs.  I really can't say how much you would need for skins, but I've heard the average (someone correct me if I'm wrong) for doing a head sculpt is 25-30 lbs.  I got it from my local(ish) dealer, but if you get it directly from Monster Makers they have a case deal, which is something like $120.00 shipped for 20 lbs.  Also, this stuff is pretty light weight, so you actually get more (volume wise) than you would if you were using something like Chavant.  It really is awesome stuff.  I've already melted it in an old crock pot a couple times, and it always comes back exactly the same as before.  Also, by warming it up you can almost get it to play dough consistency, but in 5 or so minutes it's back to being extremely hard.  It holds detail incredibly well, and works nicely with just a few different tools.  I'll bring some along with me when we finally get a chance to get together (soon I hope).  Hope this answers your question Steve!

Thanks for the information Brian. It is definitely a help to know this and I can potentially see that I will need to get some in the future.

Why do we fall? So we can learn to pick ourselves back up. ;)

Sorry to hear about that, I know all too well how it feels to have to start all over. But I am liking my new sculpt much more, and like you said, you have to keep moving forward.
I bet the next one will look even better :)

Not allot of progress, but wanted to show that I'm still slowly plugging away at this.  I've been spending most of my free time preparing for the upcoming convention, so not much to show.  I fixed the armature issues, and blocked it in thicker this time so I don't run out of clay to work with.  It's rough, but starting to take shape.

If at first you don't succeed....way to get back at it Brian. Looks good and looking forward to more progress pics.

Exactly Steve.  I learned allot from the first attempt, and have been applying it to this go around.  It's going easier and much quicker than the first time.  The only time I'm finding to work on this is on those nights (there's been too many lately) when my body thinks 1 in the morning is a good time to start the day, so I'm hoping to not make too much major progress until after the convention in a few weeks.

Is it finished yet? :)

Good to see you back on this Brian, taking shape nicely
Thanks Jason.  My suit upgrade/changes are almost done, then I plan on banging this out pretty quickly.

Right then, it's been too long since I've done anything with this, so it's time to get crackin' on it again.  The armature I was using was giving me fits with trying to keep everything in proportion without adding more clay and having the sculpt be way too big.  I made a new armature by plastering the outside of one of my smaller (not 1:1 scale) bio's and filling it with rigid foam.  It turned out great, and will allow me to get the correct dimensions and lines.  I blocked it out yesterday and hope to get some time this weekend to smooth it all out and start with the details.  I'm jonesin' hard to paint a bio, so I need to get off mu butt and get something done.  Stay tuned...

Glad to see you back on this Brian! I am looking forward to following your progress on this. I need something more to help motivate me. Lots of good stuff going on so I hope some of it will rub off in the right direction.

Steve

I'd forgotten how much fun it was to sculpt! Seeing others like yourself Brian, is inspiration and motivation! Keep it up man.
