It seems that what is purported to be the one and only screen-used bowcaster prop from the OT is going to be going up for auction at Propstore in March. It's not clear how much of the add-on greeblies and other components are supposedly original at this point, but there is mention of some restoration. Hopefully the full catalogue listing with the detailed description and photos will reveal more about it. Here is the preview photo and teaser write up:

Chewbacca’s Bowcaster
Another auction stand-out is Chewbacca’s Bowcaster, wielded by Peter Mayhew’s beloved Wookiee warrior in all three films of the original Star Wars trilogy - George Lucas’ A New Hope (1977), Irvin Kershner’s The Empire Strikes Back (1980), and Richard Marquand’s Return of the Jedi (1983) - as well as in iconic publicity photos of the character. The Bowcaster was built around a real-world Horton crossbow, modified with custom components and detailed dressing to give it a futuristic yet battle-worn look. This particular prop is believed to be the only Bowcaster used throughout the trilogy, with no evidence of a backup version, making it one of the rarest Star Wars hero props in existence. The Bowcaster had some of its dressing components removed after filming but retains key original elements, including its unique shoulder stock extension, which was custom-fabricated for Peter Mayhew during the filming of Return of the Jedi (1983). The piece also photo-matches to production stills from each of the original trilogy films. It has been sympathetically restored to its Return of the Jedi (1983) configuration, with the missing dressing components faithfully recreated. With its unmistakable silhouette and deep connection to one of Star Wars’ most beloved characters, this photo-matched piece is expected to be a major highlight of the auction, with an estimated value of $250,000 to $500,000.

Hmm, looks like the area supporting the dials is filled by two cut and painted wood blocks. The flattened barrel end held down under the sight arrangement is also interesting. Thanks for the heads-up on this auction!

Looks like the one that sold at Heritage from Planet Hollywood I think. Had that weird extension on the stalk. If the one, they replaced quite a lot of the add-ons. Not sure how you can say 100% it’s thee one but maybe they have some proof.

I think you're right, which makes you wonder why it was labelled as a "Reproduction Bowcaster" in the Planet Hollywood Heritage Auction if the base crossbow was indeed the original screen used piece. Clearly a complete rebuild now to more accurately replicate the OT look of the prop compared to how it looked in the Heritage Auction:

Its possible the original auction mislabeled it but it will be interesting to see what proof they can show. Maybe the stalk extension is their justification.

Does this mean their isn't an OG one in the Lucas archives or was it returned to Bapty to be dismantled?

Brandon says in a propstore video that Bapty stripped it back to original after SW, and thus it had to be re-greeblied for Empire, and then the extension added for ROTJ. So it is the OG base crossbow but details are post-ANH.

Is the initially restored barrel really what it looks to have been…a piece of plumbing pipe?

I’m glad they properly restored it to its former glory for this auction.

These appear to be one and the same. Looking at the two sets of photos, it's clear that many parts are the same on both listings (notably the unique, frayed bow string).

There are a few people who are used regularly by both auction houses to "restore" items to their scree-used look and feel, as seen with other props over the years that originated with Bapty.
