Scratchbuilt 1:350 USS Reliant

So i persuaded a friend to let me have a go at scratchbuilding a USS Reliant in 1:350 scale....

I'm not a super talented model maker like some around here, i didn't even have a clue where to start!

Anyhoo this is still going to take quite a while to finish, but i thought i'd post a couple of pics just to let you know how it's going

I'll do a proper build from day 1 thread when it's finished....

Comments, critiques are welcome!

Rich

Dayum! :eek What he said. Don't think you're not good at this, or not up to par for doing such a build for your friend.

I agree with what the other two here already said, in that you're doing a bang-up job on this scratch-build, dude! You make me want to have a go at doing the same conversion. The lighting's looking good, btw.

Quick question though, if you don't mind. Where did you get the appropriately sized schematics in order to start this build in the first place? They look like a good set to work from.

Thanks for the words of encouragement, guys!

The plans are readily available on the internet....i chose the ones that had the most accurate shape....basically, through trial and error, i kept resiszing them until the saucer was exactly the same diameter as the PL 1:350 refit......a bit primitive, but i couldn't think of any other way to do it....!

I've kept all the card patterns for the various bits.....i don't know if they could be reproduced in some way so others can have a go too!

Stunning!!!

I would love a 1:350 scale Reliant, it's such a great scale and it's my favourite Trek ship. Don't know if I have the confidence it takes to hack up a Refit kit though! :lol

Beautifully done!

yeah, it felt like outright vandalism, taking a dremel to a PL Refit! Every cut felt like i was making huge mistakes.....

:lol

At this point in my modelling life I just know I'd be sitting crying over a mutilated model. You're doing a great job with it. :thumbsup

Re: WIP 1:350 USS Reliant I'm building for a friend

Under these circumstances, would making a cast of the PL primary hull be taboo? Since the goal is an entirely different ship? I understand not re-casting another's work for profit, and I agree. But this would be a little different. We would be talking about re-casting a couple of parts to make an entirely different ship... I see MF builders recasting parts all the time and nobody ever makes a fuss; so how bout it?

Re: WIP 1:350 USS Reliant I'm building for a friend

Grey area I'd say. For starters (I believe) it's still a kit that's being manufactured which is a sticking point IIRC. That said, would it be taboo to cover his finished and now totally different piece in rubber to make casts? I dunno.

It's certainly an interesting conundrum. :) I was just curious. With the popularity of of the 1:350 scale PL Enterprises, it wouldn't surprise me if they put one out in the near future.

It's my sincere hope that they do a whole line in that scale. :thumbsup

Reliant, D-7, Romulan BOP, K'tinga... :love

Re: WIP 1:350 USS Reliant I'm building for a friend

The Reliant in particular would be a no-brainer, they've got a good base with the Refit!

Re: WIP 1:350 USS Reliant I'm building for a friend

That scale gets pretty big, pretty quick, though. :D The B is alright, but you know the C, D and E are ridiculous! :lol Whether PL puts them out or not, I am already working on my 1:350 scale E-project. I just wish I could afford to work faster. :)

Re: WIP 1:350 USS Reliant I'm building for a friend

I would love a Romulan bird of prey @ 1:350 scale.... (from TNG)!

* And please forgive me. I am very excited about this build and the progress is awesome. I'm sorry I didn't say so, sooner.

Yep, which is why I think they would stop at TOS and the TOS films.

Agreed. It would be HUGE though! Isn't that bigger than the D?

I think it is, but I would have to look up the details... I know on TNG, when they face off, the D and the BOP look very close in size... HECK of an awesome ship... :D

Re: WIP 1:350 USS Reliant I'm building for a friend

Back on topic, I'm interested what you used for the details on the top of the saucer (back portion). Are they all scratch built?

Yes, all scratch built! Apart from the impulse crystal thingy...which came from the refit.....I've taken a few liberties with the detailing on both the top and bottom of the "secondary hull"....but not in a wacky sense!
