Scratchbuild BSG75

Hello all, I wanted to share my latest project. A 35 inch Battlestar. The hull is solid and sheet balsa, I built the bow, middle, engines and lower hull then mated them together with superglue. I then coated the ship with two coats of fiberglass resin then started gluing 500 .60 by .60 plastic ribs.
The hull plating is scribed but I also added vinyl in blues, grays and shades of black-I like the effect. She is not in scale with my original BSG but I wanted them each to be 35-40 inches long. All that's left is to drill holes in the outboard engines so I can add superbright blue LEDs. I will post more photos on my website.
Thanks for looking.

Very cool! Thanks for sharing, I'll have teo check out the rest of the pictures.

Are you happy with how it came out? I think it looks awesome, and I bet it's really damn satisfying having scratch built it yourself!

Now, that's taking matters into your own hands! If you want something done right... Excellent work! Inspirational, in fact... ;)

You need tiny little Vipers blazing in for combat landings, as the great ship's flight pods ratchet slowly closed... Cylon Baseships sighted on the DRADIS! All hands set Condition One throughout the ship! Stand by to JUMP!!!!!

:cool

Absolutely... GORGEOUS. :thumbsup :thumbsup :thumbsup

And I agree... need lots of tiny Vipers and stuff!!!

Mate!! that is soooo good!.

As an Australian, I have not been able to see the show on TV, but order the DVDs as soon as they are relesed.

Love the new galactica nearly as much as I love the old one.

I hope one day to have a crack at this clasic myself. Great insparation !!

Thanks for sharing!!

Thanks everyone. I am very happy with how this turned out. The balsa fiberglass method of scratch-building, for me simplifyies construction of a complex subject. Balsa is cheap-easy to shape and sand and only two coats of fiberglass resin seals the pores. I first attempted this technique on a UFO lunar module model-the finish came out like glass. The next trick I discovered is Duplo gap filling primer. On the Galactica after adding the 500 some plastic ribs I had some gaps. To fill each one with putty would be impractical. With the gap filling primer all the gaps were filled with just two heavy coats.

I want to work on my Moebius Flying sub and Seaview kits but later this year I have two UFO and XL5 scratch building projects I want to start. There is just something special about making something out of nothing.
