If you could find a flat material that you can cut/carve with a blade and then soften and glue down, that could work.

I hurt my index finger and the cast they gave me uses a thermoplastic that was very easily cut and molded. If I ever make serious armor again that needs this kind of detail that's what I'm going to try to find.

You should have seen me quizzing the therapist as she made it - she probably never had a patient so interested in the material like that. I should have asked her for the scraps to see how easy it is to cut with a blade when hot.

Unfortunately work has intruded and kept me from getting much done on this the past few weeks.

I will be posting some progress pics in the next day or so. I think I found a good technique for the "scribbling" but I have a few more steps before I know if it'll work.

And, yes Boba, it WAS hell to mold. But I learned a lot and THAT'S what's important, right? :confused

Here is the latest progress. I eventually went back to my original technique for making the "scribbling" texture, drawing it out with puffy paint.

I drew it out in pencil first

Drawn out in Puffy Paint. All I had on hand is a metallic silver....Sauron all pimped out!

Primer Coat

For the base coat I chose a Krylon Fusion Metallic Dark Grey. It has a nice sheen and a cool texture. Eventually I'll apply a black for the nooks and crannies and silver highlights. One part of me thinks I should do all the weathering (on all the armour pieces) at once but I don't think I'll be able to wait THAT long.

I still have to add padding to the interior and cover the eye and nose holes.

Thanks everyone! It's a good feeling when one of these big projects gets close to done!

As far as molding this thing, I may have to wait until my mold-making skills are up to the task. At this point, I would have no idea how to effectively make a mold for this....I did a TON of cleanup work just getting this far!

To put a stake in this necro-post, I finally finished the helmet.

I heat formed some styrene to make an inner mask.

I stretched the black nylon over it

And then glued it into the helmet to hide my eyes and nose.

It only took an hour to do this last step so I'm not sure why I didn't finish this YEARS ago.

Here's the final thing!
