Satine Kryze : Star Wars Clone Wars

I've been spending this morning working on the shape and size of the rest of the headpiece. Constructing it isn't going to be as difficult as trying to figure out how it will balance and stay one. A cartoon character can just have it floating above them without any secure anchor, not so with reality. :p That may affect how I have to make it work...

I'm going with craft foam and model magic. I found some supplies in my old storage of white vinyl trim that's looking great for the talon things in the back!

You know, when I was shopping yesterday and when I found things to work with today, I started to remember that old feeling of excitement of finding something that can be transformed into a costume piece. :) No wonder I got hooked for so many years!

I just uploaded the next batch of captures... no GREAT pics of her sans-headdress, but there are some decent ones.

Those were actually really helpful.

I have to give these animators some serious credit... they aren't just plopping the flowers in her hair without consideration to how they'd stay... you can actually make out some sort of fastener system going on here!

It'll make me rethink how I do this now - the headband was far too forward on my head anyway and couldn't accommodate the lower 6 flowers. :)

Thanks so much for these!!

Thank you Obiwan2! That's one of the reasons I decided to make the costume. :D There are so few characters for blonds in Star Wars. :lol

Thanks, ligtning_st0rm. :)

No armor... not surprising. The cape and hair piece in the planet scenes was nice, but not recognizable. She might be taken for a Jedi... "Nice disguise"

I'm still running through my thinking on how to anchor the headpiece on...There doesn't appear to be any straps under her chin, but with the size of that thing I don't know that combs will suffice.

Here's some Satine costume advice straight from Dave Filoni via Facebook:

"Some advice for anyone making a costume of Satine:

Satine's headpiece should most likely be considered one whole piece (Blue Royal gown) One piece from the circular broach fastening the two sides at the base of her neck, and inclusive of the slight helmet shape top which covers her ears. It's all one connected piece on the model, thus if you think more like a helmet with "wings" down the sides, and that you are anchoring it in the front with that broach, you can see how it might stabilize on your head. Also the side "wings" should be flexible to allow for you head turning. Of course, even if we model it in one piece, I don't know if that means it'll work in one piece as far as physics or costuming goes. You'll have to try it and see what works.

I really love the beautiful work you guys do, I was blown away by the Pre Viszla helmet that showed up for the LFL fan screening. OK, have fun and stay tuned, there's more Clone Wars coming your way.

-Dave"

I don't know if it helps you much but I thought I'd post it just in case.

Interesting. Thanks for that!

I'm not sure I want to anchor it to my forehead, though. :lol I was thinking more a comb or barrette in my hair at the crown. I had planned to make several pieces but to connect them together, so that 'helmet' idea makes a lot of sense.

I may have to become a fan of this guy. :love hmmm --- couldn't find him on there.

I want to join up whatever group you got that info from Danakin.

As far as the headpiece goes, I was kind of thinking of it as a collar more than a helmet. Maybe some buckram covered with the gown fabric. Should provide enough flexibility to retain head movement. You could stabilize it on top by tacking it to the little blue crown that juts from her headpiece?

Thanks, Dan. :) Everytime FB changes their layout I seem to have to relearn how to do simple things. I can't work the search function on groups and fan pages now. gah!

I'm sick with some sort of sinus infection, so all I have had in me to do is a mock up to figure out how big the head piece should be. It turned out kind of creepy looking, so I thought I'd share. haha

The thinking was to take a photo of me with a 6 inch ruler and then overlap the images for size. When I draw this out on paper I'll be able to estimate easier and maybe even get pretty close the first time! We'll see...

Darth Mule, I have a lot of experience with craft foam, so I'm going to try that first. It's fairly light an inexpensive. If it doesn't work, I'll be looking into your suggestion more. From what I read on the stuff, that looks like a good possibility. Thanks! :)

Despite grumblings from others, I thought the Satine character was great, not to mention the story arc (hopefully we'll get some more Mandalorian plots). I'm glad to see that others took notice. This should be a great thread to watch.

The template work for the headdress is slow going because I have to build enough of it so it will stand on it's own before I can take photos and see if it's the right size and what adjustments need to be made... :confused

Meanwhile, I found some of the aqua fabric today at a great price.

I've also been doing some on line searches for fabric for the blue.

These might take a while to load because they're big... I'm not even sure if I'll go with any of these because they are all on line and I like to see what I'm buying in person if it's going to cost as much as some of these. But I thought I'd post them as some examples of how I go about doing research for fabric. :D They are all cotton (but maybe one or two) and would likely need to be lined to have the look, but nothing I have seen with the weight in the animation has been anything but solid or really the wrong color/pattern.

That Quilt Blender Navy looks really close.

On the close ups the headdress material looks mottled but in the wide shots it looks like it has a definite pattern but the close up of the outer robe definitely seems to suggest a pattern. I say go with the Quilt Blender for the headdress and one of the florals for the outer robe.

Keep up the good work, looking forward to seeing the finished costume.

The quilt blender is very close in color, but it is a cartoon, so you can have some creative license and go for one of the more interesting fabrics like the essentials scroll or moda marbles.

Nice selections. Blue Tonga Batik would look great, as would several of the others. I agree that a distinct pattern, while not exactly matching the mottled look of the animated version, would be more true to form for her dress.

Thanks for the feedback - I am torn between going with as close to the cartoon as I can or having my own interpretation.

Thanks to Lonepigeon, I now have an even more clear vision of the cartoon:

I think I may go back to the quilting store near here and get a few swatches to play around with and see what I like.

Here is a photo of the aqua color fabric.

You've probably already seen this, but I thought this line drawing helps to see the form of the headdress.
