Sandbagger's Iron-Man builds - Now in STEEL

dude there are not enough words in any language to describe just how awesome this build is, you really should be proud of your accomplishment, so cant wait to see the final finished article, you inspire me and im sure many others to push myself to do better

Both legs have now been elevated and supported on pairs of solid steel struts welded to the boots and pivoting at the ankle. You can see an aluminium flat disk on the right boot - this will be replaced later with a more attractive steel turned toe-pivot. The flight control flap at the back of the ankle has been hinges so now it swings up as the boot and leg moves. The knee pivots will eventually be welded closed with an attractive cap once I'm happy I don't need to take the legs apart again. Rubber soles have been glued onto the bottom of the boots to save flooring.feel

The rib features have now been filled in from behind with scratch-built steel caps. It looks untidy with the positioning spot welds from the front and the rest of the welding from behind, but this will all be cleaned up later.

The steel sheet is only .95mm thick, so to give the illusion that it is thick armoured plate I have welded in some 8mm edging all around. Welding from behind except in spots I couldn't get the welding gun into. Edges will be cleaned up last.

The lighting is great, but the eyes are too bright for indoors and night. They overpower the dark so much you can't see the face, so I'll be adding a resistor/dimmer so I can vary the brightness as needed.

^^^ Bless ya Stig and Peej. :D

G'day my loyal minions. Here's an update for you.

My wonderful wife helped me get the legs and boots on for a test walk in the modified joints.

Now the legs are supported on steel struts welded to the boots and pivoting at the ankles. The knees have been silenced with washers in between the joints and the flight control flaps at the ankle have been hinged. They will be spring-loaded at a later date. The boots now have rubber soles to protect the floor.

Here's video and some photos.

Still trimming it up and tweaking it. I've got the workshop at home prepped for clean-up now so I'll start tidying up all the edges and welds. Some of the larger dents and warps need some heat with the blowtorch to pop them out or I'll be using too much body-filler to correct them. Don't want to add unnecessary weight.

Before painting I also have to find enough money to buy all the electronics to go inside. Especially the video glasses and cameras for the helmet.

I have a friend up in Sydney who is making me some custom undergloves for the gauntlets. I'll start work on the armouring for them as soon as they arrive.

Just a thought mate but I have one of these for my car and they are only £11.00 each

Is there any way you could modify 2 of these so the cameras were in the chest area and the 2 screens in the helmet?
What am I talking about????
You built a real Iron man suit, I'm sure that will be a piece of p1ss for a man with your talents!

Nice idea, but too bulky. There's only a couple of inches between my face and the inside of the faceplate. Just enough room to squeeze the optics for the video glasses in. The camearas for those FPV choppers and such are tiny. Perfect for the job. The cameras are relatively cheap, but the glasses range from $80 to $400, depending on quality and function. I'll work it out.

Thanks mate. :D

This is so awesome SB! Just out of curiosity, how much have you spent on the steel so far? I have a mate who is in awe of your build and wanted to know.

Depends on how you buy it. I couldn't get 1200 x 2400 full sheets home, ($50) so I was buying 800 x 600 sheets at $20 each. Much more expensive that way but what can you do when you don't have a ute or trailer?
