Sandbagger's Iron-Man builds - Now in STEEL

Sorry about the blurry phone pics. I got the shoulder bells and arms attached today. Now everything is on, I have to get dressed in the whole suit, go for a bit of a walk around and get an assistant to mark all the spots where I get pinches, rubs and restricted movement. Then I can trim it up.

Up better be a pretty fit guy to wear this around. Unless it's just for show. This will weigh a good 150-200lbs once complete

Just wondering: will you be constructing the hands/gloves as well,or will that be too complicated in steel?

They are certainly difficult. I've done about eight different versions of the gloves out of foam, cardboard and steel. Still no solution yet but I am sure I will figure it out when I get to it.

I wonder if gettng thin tube aluminum pipes and flattening out portions would make for real metal fingers

I wish people would stop saying this. It weighs 35kg. A third of that is in the legs and feet and sits on the ground. What's the problem?

I used to get that all the time when I did armored combat and had a full suit of gothic plate mail. "How can you move! That must weigh a ton. I bet you can't hardly move.". My whole kit weighed about 45lbs with the helmet and was properly strapped so that meant the weight was scattered all around my body. I could run, swing a sword, sit down, kneel and would wear it for hours at a time. Until someone has worked with metal and worn a suit of armor they just have no concept of how it works and how lightweight and dynamic it can be.

Awesome work! Keep it up!

Thanks man. :thumbsup

Thanks so much to Shane and Zoe for your assistance tonight in fitting the Iron Man suit and going for a little walk in it for the very first time complete!

Together we identified plenty of points in the suit that need modification to make movement smooth and to tie it all in together. My spring-suit underneath will be modified into an under-suit with layered foam armour to fill in the gaps. The steel neck has to be cut down a whole inch and replaced with hybrid material (foam) to allow me to turn my head. The legs need to be pulled up higher to correct location and improve knee movement.

I have to accept that there will be a fair bit of range-of-motion simply not possible, but just getting in it and moving around has made it really come alive for me!

It is way more comfortable than you would think. I was very relaxed in the suit and it is not heavy at all. I could literally spend hours in it.

Lots to go yet but tonight's full fit was a big part of making it all work!

I have a video shortly, but just waiting to see if I can rotate the stupid player footage.
